To work as a member of the PICU Admin Team providing a clerical & reception service to support our nursing & clinical colleagues, to support the smooth running of the unit.
The post holder will be based within the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, part of the Medicine Directorate. This is a highly specialised, fast-paced clinical environment providing intensive, life-sustaining care to some of the most seriously ill children across the region and beyond.
Main duties of the job
To work as part of the PICU Admin Team that provides ward clerk and reception cover 365 days per year, including Christmas & Bank Holidays.
To provide an exemplary Ward Clerk/Reception service to the nursing, medical staff & families of the patients on PICU. To ensure that clerical needs are met on a daily basis. To maintain real time bed management.
To scan clinical documentation onto patient records, working to a high standard of data quality & attention to detail. To maintain the highest level of customer service skills when dealing with families and all visitors to the PICU.

Literate & articulate
Essential
- GCSE English C grade or above
- Level 2 qualification or equivalent knowledge/experience
- Excellent telephone manner
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Extensive administration experience in a busy environment
- Demonstrable ability to use MS office packages
- Ability to make decisions in situations/courses of action which require analysis
- Able to use a trolley to move heavier loads, e.g. stationery.
- Smart appearance
- Excellent attendance record
- Excellent attention to detail
- Able to prioritise workload
- Able to remain calm under pressure
- Ability to deal sensitively with distressed/bereaved families
Desirable
- Previous experience working in a ward environment
- Previous experience working in an NHS setting
- Knowledge and understanding of the Data Protection Act (GDPR) 2018 & patient confidentiality
- Working knowledge of Health & safety in the workplace legislation
