Job overview

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and forward-thinking professional to join our team on a 12-month secondment basis, as a Band 6 Phlebotomy Services Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop a dedicated phlebotomy service, supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care across Broadgreen and Royal Liverpool Hospitals.

You will provide leadership to a team of phlebotomy staff, ensuring services are well organised, patient-focused, and responsive to the needs of the Trust. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with strong leadership skills, a commitment to service improvement and a passion for developing others. This role offers the opportunity to influence practice, drive quality improvements and support the future development of phlebotomy services across LUHFT.

Main duties of the job

As Phlebotomy Services Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day operational management of phlebotomy services, ensuring safe staffing levels, effective service delivery, and high standards of patient care. You will provide leadership and support to phlebotomy teams, manage staff performance, attendance, and development, and ensure compliance with Trust policies and mandatory training requirements.

The role includes coordinating workforce planning, supporting recruitment activities, managing complaints and incidents, promoting clinical governance and leading service improvements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Exercise strong and effective leadership acting as an exemplary role model for the phlebotomy teams.

Maintain adequate staff cover and skill mix through effective use of staffing rotas.

Ensure staff compliance with mandatory training and maintain current records.

Ensure effective communication with patients and their carers.

Ensure effective communication with relatives, community staff, medical staff, laboratory managers, other hospitals and local agencies.

Lead phlebotomy team meeting to ensure appropriate information is communicated to all team members.

Ensure that the phlebotomy services participate in maintaining standards relating to clinical governance.

Responsible for the implementation of risk management policies within phlebotomy including the development, implementation and monitoring of action plans to address identified risks.

Responds within appropriate time frames to patient complaints and concerns and ensure outcomes and action plans are implemented and monitored.

Responsible for ensuring compliance with Trust policies and procedures.

In collaboration with the outpatient services manager, implement the Trust grievance/disciplinary policy with the aim of ensuring early identification of performance issues.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
