A Children’s Nurse in a busy Emergency Department provides safe, timely and child‑centred care to babies, children and young people presenting with acute illness, injury or safeguarding concerns. The role requires rapid assessment, clinical decision‑making and effective triage to prioritise care according to clinical need.
The post holder monitors and interprets vital signs, recognises deterioration, administers prescribed treatments and supports emergency procedures, including trauma and resuscitation. Working in a fast‑paced and unpredictable environment, the Children’s Nurse must manage competing priorities, adapt quickly to changing situations and remain calm and professional under pressure.
Effective communication with children, families and the multidisciplinary team is essential, particularly during stressful or emotional situations. Safeguarding responsibilities are integral to the role, alongside accurate documentation and adherence to the NMC Code and local policies.
The Children’s Nurse contributes to maintaining patient safety, service quality and a supportive learning environment for colleagues and students.
Main duties of the job
You must be highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges, in paediatric emergency care.
You must be willing to participate in health promotion to care for the children of our community.
Have continuing responsibility for the delivery of care needs and maintenance of Clinical Standards on the ward/dept.
Support to all grades of staff, planning and directing activities to provide the optimal standard of care.
Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence based, holistic family centred care with the Multi-disciplinary team to children and young people.
To act as an advocate on behalf of children and their families.
Ensure that the ward/dept. is clean and provides a safe environment for children, parents and staff.
The aim of this post is to gain competences, knowledge, skills and experience in ED to progress to leadership level.
