Job summary
We invite applications for two fixed-term locum consultant paediatric posts, both for a four-month period with the potential extension of one post. Both posts will be based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital
Post 1 is a maternity replacement post, which includes support of the paediatric respiratory MDT. This is an opportunity to work alongside an experienced respiratory team at consultant level to gain skills and knowledge in this specialty in addition to acute and elective general paediatric work
Post 2 is a general paediatric consultant post. Acute work will include participating in the delivery of acute ward weeks, the consultant on call rota, daytime acute sessions to support winter activity and some general paediatric clinics.

Main duties of the job
Respiratory Service- Post 1
*The appointee will work alongside an experienced team of respiratory consultants and MDT to support the Asthma and respiratory workload
*There is a weekly Respiratory MDT meeting you will be expected to attend during your non acute weeks
*SPA time can be utilised to gain experience of the respiratory management of neuromuscular conditions, cystic fibrosis and non-invasive ventilation, through attending clinics and specific MDT meetings
Acute paediatrics service- Post 2
*The appointee will provide support to acute paediatrics, including additional PAU daytime sessions
*Rapid access and general paediatric clinics
*There is opportunity to develop as a consultant with exposure to delivering teaching and supervision, management meetings, governance and research opportunities

Job responsibilities
* Broad training in general paediatrics
* APLS/EPALS provider
* Ability to develop and adopt speciality interest in Asthma and Respiratory medicine with support
of the Respiratory MDT
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within
specialty
* Experience and understanding of and ability to use evidence base and clinical audit to support
decision making
* IT and data interpretation skills
* Align with UHB Trust values and have up to date knowledge of the structure and processes of the
NHS
* Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and develop effective working relationships with all
levels of staff.
* Ability to support, mentor and contribute to supervision and development of undergraduate and
postgraduate resident doctors in training
To contribute to the general paediatric consultant service. The post holder will share in the provision of
general Paediatrics, high dependency, elective and ambulatory care. Responsibility for day-to-day
management of the Paediatric Unit and all associated work will be shared by all the consultants.
Consultant cover is required on a 24-hour 7-day week basis.
Clinical Audit and Quality
There are active audit and quality Improvement activities across the trust and all doctors are encouraged
to take up audits as part of their training. The audit department provides all necessary support in audit
projects.
