Look no further The orthopaedic department is proud to introduce the plaster technician role. This is a brand new opportunity to join the highly specialist plaster room team But what does this mean? You will work alongside our highly skilled and experienced team of orthopaedic practitioners. They are all holders of the British Orthopaedic Association casting certificate and are true experts in their niche role.

Main duties of the job

This position is a development opportunity to become a plaster technician. Once a local competency programme is completed, you will be expected to undertake the following duties independently. Whilst training you will work closely with experienced orthopaedic practitioners in all aspects of work ensuring completion of agreed level of competence enabling department to continue to provide an extensive casting and appliance service for adults and children in an inpatient and outpatient setting on multiple trust sites daily. The Trainee will develop their practice through a work-based learning programme across several clinical areas including outpatients, the base trauma orthopaedic wards, and theatre settings. It is expected that the training will be completed within 24 months from start date. You will be expected to complete the British Orthopaedic association casting certificate during the 24 month training period. Failure to complete the local competency package or certificate will result in a review of the post holders level of competency. In the event the post holder is not able to achieve competency with reasonable support measure, this may result in dismissal from the role.

Why you should join our Team

As the service is evolving, it’s important that our team does too, and that’s where the plaster technician role comes in. You will learn everything you need to know in a hands on way, learning on the job and completing a local competency programme. This will prepare you to undertake the British Orthopaedic Association casting certificate course which will be funded by the department.

You will learn the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology and use this knowledge to inform and support your practice, which will always be under the supervision of an orthopaedic practitioner.

You will be part of a busy acute service that serves the whole city, the inpatient bed base, and major trauma patients from all over the region. You will also have the opportunity to work in theatres, casting intra and post operatively, and cover specialist services such as the baby talipes clinic.

This is an interesting and varied role and prior orthopaedic experience is essential.

What you will bring to the role
