Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a motivated and experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist to support the delivery of high-quality ophthalmic services within the directorate. This post has been developed to provide additional capacity, enhance service resilience, and support the existing team in maintaining safe and effective patient care.
The successful candidate will contribute to a broad range of ophthalmology services, including cataract clinics and surgery, subspecialty clinics (such as glaucoma and/or medical retina), and trauma care. The role will also involve participation in the review of emergency inpatients, and delivery of both elective and urgent care pathways.
The post holder will undertake a combination of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) activities—including clinics, theatre lists, and intravitreal injection sessions—as well as Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), in line with Trust expectations. Flexibility will be required to respond to service demands, including validation work and service development initiatives.

Essential
- Demonstrates an understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
- Experience of implementing evidenced based changes in practice
- Peer reviewed publications
Desirable
- MD/PhD or working towards
- Evidence of research in and experience of implementing digital technologies
- Evidence of research in management of patients in burns units.
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Evidence of broad-based training
- Sub-specialty training to fellowship level
- Evidence of experience in running general, medical retina, cataract, and glaucoma clinics.
- Evidence of teaching to meet the requirements of junior doctors and nurses
- Evidence of continuing medical education (existing consultants must demonstrate active participation in CPD)
- Evidence of experience in cataract and anterior segment surgery.
- Evidence of experience in managing patients in burns units
- Track record in delivering management initiatives.
Qualifications and Training:
Essential
- Full GMC Registration
- Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by PMET/GMC by date if Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC))
- FRCOphth or equivalent
- Good understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
