The role of the Operational Flow Manager / Senior Controller pivotal within the organisation for leading on and monitoring of operational issues relating to patient flow throughout the health board.
The post holder will take a lead in the patient-focused management of patient flow through the Emergency Unit and the rest of the hospital. Providing expertise in Patient Flow and Site Services and within the Emergency Department, working to ensure effective flow of the unscheduled and scheduled patient streams from admission to discharge, in collaboration and consultation with senior managers and clinical teams, Head of Operations and Head of Patient Flow to provide operational line management and professional leadership to the Patient Flow Coordinators, Bed Bureau staff and Discharge Lounge staff within the University Hospital of Wales.
They will need to utilise their clinical expertise, knowledge & skills to contribute to the provision of a high quality service to patients, with a particular emphasis on time flow in conjunction with the Head of Operations.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
- Work collaboratively. with the unscheduled care team to ensure patient flow through the emergency and assessment units, ensuring patient safety is paramount at all times
- Monitor and report barriers to discharge, working in collaboration with the Directorate Teams, Clinical Support Services and External Organisations/ Agencies to identify strategies to manage these.
- Work collaboratively with partnership organisations and ensure regular, timely and effective communication between services. To act as the lead operational link with the Directorate Management Teams, Senior Nurses and Medical Staff during times of bed shortages and to maintain a proactive approach in dealing with the management of actual and potential bed crisis.
- Direct daily communication with Senior Clinicians and Executives regarding high level decisions on Patient Flow e.g. Waiting Lists / Elective admissions.
- Communicate with Key departments in order to ensure a coordinated and efficient approach to the management of patient’s admissions.
- Use highly developed communication and collaboration skills with other Health Boards, Welsh Ambulance Service Trust, Local Health Boards and Welsh Government to develop common approaches to patient access and the management of bed capacity, working towards the achievement of local and national targets.
