We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a Band 6 - Senior Nurse Fertility Specialist to join the Wolfson Fertility Centre team at Hammersmith Hospital.   • Develop your fertility, surgical, and gynaecological nursing skills in a supportive environment.
  • Provide a high standard of care for your patients.
  • Work alongside members of the multi-disciplinary team including specialist fertility nurses, embryologists and doctors.

You will work as a part of Multidisciplinary Team with additional support from our Clinical Practice Educator. There are many learning opportunities available including, fertility, theatre, egg collections, embryo transfers, basic scanning, pain management, health promotion, patient education, pre-operative, intra operative and post procedure care.

Main duties of the job

  • Assess the needs of women and men with subfertility problems, initiating and accepting referrals as appropriate.
  • Undertake assessment, implementation and evaluation of patients to provide specific care, advice, support and counselling where necessary.
  • Proactive participation in the co-ordination of the patient care across the patient pathway, contributing to the development the pathway to maximise patient satisfaction and outcomes.
  • Participate in and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings and specialist clinics.
  • Develop advanced skills e.g. ultrasound scanning to undertake follicle tracking, undertake intrauterine insemination and other treatments as required and for which competency has been assessed, referring to experienced practitioners for advice and under supervision where necessary.
  • Undertake nurse coordination clinics, providing specialist information and advice regarding fertility treatments, risks and side effects and self-administration of medicines, supporting patients with choices and in undertaking the consent process.

Person specification

EDUCATION

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Relevant nursing/health related degree
  • Teaching or Mentorship course or equivalent

Desirable

  • Qualification in ultrasound scanning
  • Gynaecology or Fertility related qualification

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Recent experience working in an assisted conception unit
  • Knowledge of current trends/treatments in fertility and reproductive medicine
  • Good understanding of clinical governance and quality management in health care
  • Specialised knowledge relevant to the field of practice

Desirable

  • Change management experience
  • Experience of undertaking research and/or audit

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Essential

  • Able to handle difficult and emotional clinical situations and to communicate distressing news in a caring and compassionate manner
  • Demonstrates ability or potential to undertake nurse-led clinics
  • Ability to support and facilitate changes in practice
  • Able to produce good quality patient information and SOP’s/guidelines relevant to area of practice

Desirable

  • Independent prescriber
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills
  • Intrauterine insemination skills
