Job overview
Due to investment in our education team we are looking for a high profile, accessible and responsive educator. A clinical expert, working as a member of the multi-professional team, providing and developing specialist services and advice who is able to make informed decisions within their own speciality and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards and objectives are met.
The post holder will be expected to provide clinical expertise and knowledge, demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues related to identification, assessment, treatment and management of the Neonate and the Neonatal service. The post holder will focus on supporting the Neonatal QIS nurses / Midwives in training. They will monitor and improve standards of education through clinical audit, evidence base practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will lead on the following key areas:
- Supporting students on a neonatal clinical placement and be a first point of contact for assessors to offer guidance for issues relating to competence.
- To provide pastoral support and training to students
- To be conduit between the universities, students and clinical placements
- To continue to develop, support and evaluate cot side teaching within all areas of the Neonatal service.
- To ensure a yearly education plan is submitted for learning beyond registration funding or facilitate the submission of charity funding as applicable.
- Facilitating Qualified In Speciality (QIS) applications to University and Study time on the roster.
- Supporting QIS students and be a first point of contact for assessors to offer guidance for issues relating to competence.
- Ensuring that student placement is aligned to the allocations provided by the Practice Placement Coordinator and rostered to meet the NMC competencies.
- Support and lead if required with investigations of practice concerns / competency.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
UHCW’S Level III Neonatal Unit provides a wide range of services to sick newborn babies and forms part of the West Midlands Perinatal Network . The unit strives to provides family centered care to a range of babies from those born extremely prematurely around 22 weeks gestation to term babies who are sick at birth. We offer therapies such as Nitric Oxide, Cooling and ROP laser surgery using state of the art, new equipment.
UHCW neonatal unit looks after up to 8 Intensive care cots, 8 High dependency cots, 14 Special care cots and 6 Transitional care cots. We have a LMNS Outreach service, a large AHP team and a psychological and counselling service for families and staff. The unit has been accredited as Baby Friendly by Unicef for the excellent practice in the support of infant feeding and parent-infant relationships. We have also been awarded our Silver Bliss award. In our last reported CQC inspection (2018) UHCW was rated as good.
Over the years the unit has built an excellent reputation for high quality healthcare and outstanding career development. We support extended roles such as FiCare lead nurse, Transport Nurse, Neonatal Educational Practitioner, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Developmental Care Nurse & Infant Feeding Nurse roles. We also encourage development onto UHCWi sessions and management courses to help you progress your career. Our team of nurses help support parent resuscitation training, sibling support sessions as well as monthly parent coffee mornings and ‘Graduate’ parties. We are proud to have motivated teams delivering award winning Quality improvement projects.
