Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of a successful team in the role of Cancer Clinical Trials Medical Technical Officer. We are looking for a dynamic individual to join this busy department. The post holder will be working closely with site personnel to prepare and process biological samples for shipment. The post holder will be required to work autonomously at times and will lead on training new staff in laboratory techniques.  The successful candidate will manage their time and workload effectively, whilst delivering, maintaining and developing a high-quality technical service.

The individual will be part of an expanding and dynamic team helping research staff to deliver excellent care to patients with cancer.  The post holder will also be required to deliver and verify trial specific information to sponsors, support the team with the set-up of new clinical trials and assist in trial audits.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience working in a laboratory, knowledge of good clinical practice, excellent verbal and written communication skills and be highly organised and conscientious.  However, if you have some of these criteria, and a clear desire to do the job, please apply.

Cancer Services sits within the Surgery and Cancer Board. It incorporates comprehensive outpatient, day care, and ambulatory care and inpatient services for the specialities of inpatient and outpatient oncology and Haematology. The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit office is based in 250 Euston Rd and comprises of three main areas: Haematology, Oncology and Paediatric Oncology and it supports activity in the local Clinical Research Facility and the North Thames Local Comprehensive Research Network and Experimental Cancer Centre.  Each group comprises teams of research nurses, clinical trial practitioners and data managers and provides support to local Investigators wishing to conduct clinical trials and other high-quality clinical research projects within UCLH.  Each team supports a process for agreeing a portfolio of research and ensures that trials are conducted to the highest standards and in accordance with UK legislation and the R&D Governance Framework.  The aim of the Unit is to effectively use resources so as to ensure that patients have access to entry into clinical trials, as appropriate, and maintain the highest quality of care for patients.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a laboratory setting
  • IT experience including use of databases, MS Word and Excel.
  • Data inputting in lab computer Systems

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with colleagues.
  • Effective in liaising with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely and accurate sample processing and documentation.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work rotational shift pattern where required
  • Good hand eye co-ordination for fine use of instrumentation.
  • Capable of working with hazardous high-risk samples and daily exposure to infectious material / hazardous chemicals
  • Capable of repetitive movements when processing / analysing specimens.
  • Capable of long periods sitting at computers inputting data.
  • Moderate physical effort e.g. lifting archive boxes, site files, dry ice boxes.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • 5 GSCE passes at A-C grade including Maths and English or equivalent
  • Foundation degree (in a science subject)
  • Have a good knowledge of a range of laboratory procedures.
  • Familiarity with medical terms.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety.
  • Knowledge of Equal Opportunities & Data Protection / Confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice, Good Laboratory Practise and Research Governance

Personal and People Development

Essential

  • Willingness and ability to assist in the training of less experienced staff in laboratory procedure.
  • Participation in laboratory inductions and relevant seminars/training to maintain competence.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own workload and support planning for others.
  • Commitment to ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Desirable

  • Contribution to the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
