Job overview

Are you are an experienced nurse looking for a new challenge?

If you are enthusiastic, highly motivated and seeking to drive forward the provision of high quality care within Acute Medicine then this post is for you. We are seeking to appoint an experienced Senior Nurse to join our established Matron team.

The Acute Medicine Matron plays a pivotal leadership role within our Directorate, providing visible, compassionate, and clinically credible leadership across our Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Acute Frailty Unit and Cardio-Respiratory Ward, including a CCU and MECU. You will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of consistently high quality, safe, and patient centred care in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

The successful candidate will be a confident, compassionate leader who thrives under pressure, demonstrates integrity in decision making, and is committed to delivering outstanding care for patients with complex and often rapidly changing clinical needs. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of acute medical services and play a key role in improving patient outcomes and staff experience.

The successful candidate will work closely alongside other members of the HDFT Matron Team to provide a 7-day service.

We welcome any interested applicants to contact us for an informal chat and/or visit.

Main duties of the job

As Matron, you will lead by example, championing professional standards, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a culture where staff feel supported, valued, and empowered to deliver excellent care. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, operational leaders, and senior nursing colleagues to ensure effective patient flow, robust clinical governance, and strong workforce management.

This role requires a highly motivated senior nurse with significant experience in acute, general or emergency medicine, excellent communication skills, and the ability to balance operational demands with strategic priorities. You will oversee safe staffing, lead quality improvement initiatives, support the development of nursing teams, and ensure compliance with national standards, Trust policies, and regulatory requirements.
