The Matron will ensure the delivery of exceptional patient centred and safe care to patients across Critical Care. The Matron should be highly visible and accessible. They should be an exemplary role model for nurses, leading by example and empowering staff to undertake a greater range of clinical tasks to modernise and improve patient care. This role is key to supporting the delivery of the Nursing and Midwifery Strategy. You will be responsible for maintaining an environment which is conducive to the delivery and maintenance of a high standard of patient centred care, with the delivery of good communication and relationships between staff within the hospital and outside agencies, patients, relatives and visitors. You will be responsible for enhancing existing services in and establishing new ways of working focussing on quality, innovation, productivity and prevention. You will be expected to participate in Greater Manchester Critical Care Network Meetings. They will provide clinical and managerial leadership to a defined clinical area, ensuring that nursing standards are monitored and maintained; that the patient’s environment is safe and meets environmental standards; that Department budgets are balanced and that staff are personally and professionally developed. Provide strong management support to the Head of Nursing for Surgery, Women’s and Children’s.
Main duties of the job

- Responsibility and accountability for assisting to manage budgets with the Band 7’s and Business Manager and leading on the performance and modernisation agenda within Critical Care,
- To support the Trust’s corporate objectives and the processes by which they are achieved, including clinical governance, controls assurance, risk management and capacity planning
- To support complaint investigations as and when required, compiling responses to be made available for signature as appropriate.
- To participate in the First on-call rota.
- To have lead responsibility for the delivery of patient care across Critical Care.
- To lead service design and redesign with staff in developing programmes of care and patient pathways to provide the best evidence based care that the organisation can deliver.
- Provide effective, professional leadership and co-ordination throughout Critical Care.

To adopt and advocate the principal of redesigning processes around the patient, making sure that the best possible patient experience is the key objective in every service development or improvement project. 13. To support the Clinical Leads and Clinical Governance Leads in embedding Clinical Governance and Risk Management within Critical Care, Managerially responsible for all nursing staff, unqualified and admin and clerical staff within Critical Care. 14. Undertake continuous professional development, seeking opportunities to enhance skills which can be identified via a Personal Development plan, for all staff in areas of responsibility. 15. Work with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure nurses and the wider clinical team are empowered to undertake enhanced roles and activities to their full potential. ADMINISTRATIVE / MANAGERIAL To assume budgetary responsibility for the designated area and to achieve financial balance in pay and non-pay budgets. Participate in the identification of cost improvement initiatives, including Cost improvement programme (CIP) options. To support the Assist the Head of Nursing in the investigation and management of complaints; to try to ensure local resolution of complaints as far as is practicable, and to ensure practice and behaviour is altered in response to complaints management across the Trust. To provide the Head of Nursing with a regular report on the management of complaints in line with the NHS Complaints management targets. Chief Executive – Karen James OBE Chairman – Jane McCall To provide management support to the Head of Nursing , Lead Consultant and Business Manager in the management and delivery of the Division’s clinical service and performance targets. To work in close liaison with the Bed Management Team to manage activity effectively within the Trust. Participation in the out-of-hours first on call rota. To ensure all staff adhere to Trust policies and procedures. To maintain good communication between all grades and disciplines of staff within the Division and with patients and families. To promote the safety and wellbeing of patients and staff in accordance with the Health and Safety policy, reporting any untoward occurrences. To proactively manage attendance in accordance with Trust policy. HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT: To work with the Ward/Unit Managers with specific reference to line management responsibilities and professional and personal development, to give assurance on standards of care delivery. In liaison with the Head of Nursing as appropriate, assume overall line management responsibility for the staff within the designated clinical area, undertaking all duties associated with personnel and financial management, e.g. recruitment, personal development planning and review, organisation of staff rotas; disciplinary procedure, etc. To develop and lead the nursing workforce within the designated area in implementing the Trust’s objectives in relation to: Clinical Governance; patient involvement, providing a particular link to the Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service, practice development; the production of standards and the undertaking of benchmarking exercises.. To ensure that all staff access appropriate mandatory training and ensure that all training is recorded on the appropriate information system. SECTION 2- KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Continually evaluate own and others’ practice using a range of evidence - based approaches. Critically appraise and synthesise the outcomes of relevant research and evaluations and apply them to the improving practice. Alert appropriate agencies and people to gaps in evidence and/or knowledge that require evaluation or research. Implement research findings appropriate to practice. Participate in the identification of service development priorities. Identify training needs associated with practice changes/developments. Lead specific areas of practice developments in accordance with Local and National policies and strategies to improve patient care. SECTION 3- EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT Partake regularly in tasks requiring physical effort for short periods. Including at least one clinical shift per fortnight. Required to sit, stand, walk and drive. Regularly required to use a PC. Frequently required to concentrate on complex issues for long periods. Occasionally required to prepare reports for the Chief Nurse relating to specific issues. Required to maintain contemporaneous records at all times. Frequently deals with unpredictable interruptions and manages complex situations. Regularly deals with patient complaints and occasionally exposed to aggression. Regularly deals with staff problems and issues and occasionally conveys bad news. Regular exposure to body fluids. SECTION 4-ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 1. To provide cover for colleagues as directed by your manager. 2. Risk Management (Health & Safety) a) You will follow risk management procedures at all times. The Risk Management procedures for the Trust and the department are kept by the departmental manager. b) You are personally responsible for Risk Management issues in respect of yourself and your colleagues. c) If you identify a potential hazard you should report it to your manager / supervisor at once. If in doubt you should speak to your manager for guidance. d) You must always use safety equipment provided, and report any defects to your manager. You must attend Risk Management Training as directed by your manager. e) If you are a manager or have line management responsibilities for staff or a department or area of work, you are responsible for the Risk Management issues in that area. You will ensure that there is an annual Risk Management audit in your area and make sure that where necessary, an action plan eradicating risks is drawn up and implemented. Infection Prevention and Control a) You are personally responsible for ensuring that you protect yourself, patients, visitors and colleagues from the risks of infection associated with health care activities and the care environment. b) You must adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times liaising with the infection control team and acting on any instructions given. c) You must attend regular infection prevention and control update training. d) You should at all times promote and demonstrate good practice for the prevention and control of infection. 4. To avoid any behaviour which discriminates against your fellow employees, or potential employees on the grounds of their sex, sexual orientation, marital status, race, religion, creed, colour, nationality, ethnic origin or disability. 5. To safeguard at all times confidentiality of information relating to patients and staff. 6 Child Protection and Vulnerable People It is the responsibility of all staff to safeguard children and/or vulnerable adults, to access training to ensure they know what constitutes abuse, and what support is available to them, at a level appropriate to their role and responsibilities. To report any concerns, without delay, to the identified person within their department/division or area of responsibility as per the relevant policies, keeping clear records, and following up as required to ensure necessary actions have been taken. 7. No Smoking Policy The Trust operates a No Smoking Policy which states that smoking is prohibited within all Trust premises and on the site. This includes entrances, exits, cars, lease cars, car parks, pavements and walkways, areas hidden from general view and residences. As an employee of the Trust you are expected to comply with this policy, failure to do so may result in disciplinary action being taken under the Trust’s Conduct and Disciplinary Policy. 8.
