Job overview

The postholder will provide high-quality, consultant-led care in lower limb surgery within Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with hip, knee, and associated musculoskeletal conditions (inclusive, ideally, of soft tissue conditions, such as multi-ligament injuries). The role will entail a strong emphasis on elective recovery and, where necessary, trauma services across outpatient clinics, operating theatres, and inpatient ward settings (including periprosthetic and complex femoral fractures).

The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred care, supporting the Trust’s commitment to clinical excellence and continuous improvement. The postholder will contribute to service development, clinical governance, audit, and teaching, including the supervision and training of junior medical staff.

Participation in departmental activities potentially including on-call rotas, service planning, and innovation will be expected, alongside maintaining the Trust’s high standards in quality, safety, and patient experience.

The post-holders base hospital will be West Middlesex University Hospital, but they will be expected to work across multiple sites where required, such as the Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Central Middlesex Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The weekly timetable for this role includes fracture clinic, outpatient clinics, main theatre sessions, ward rounds, and an allocated off day (which may need to be applied flexibly, depending on where capacity is available). The post also incorporates core SPA time, alongside responsibilities such as triaging, advice and guidance (A&G), and participation in PTL meetings. In addition, there is a flexible DCC session which may be used for either clinic or theatre work, as well as dedicated administrative time for list planning.
