This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Plastic Surgery at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital, rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. The Paediatric Plastic Surgery Service at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BWCH) provides secondary level Paediatric Plastic services to the children and young people of Birmingham, and tertiary care to those in the wider region and beyond, incorporating several specialist services including children's hand and upper limb surgery, vascular malformations, general paediatric plastic surgery trauma including lower limb trauma and laser treatment. It also provides plastic surgical reconstructive support to other surgical specialties.
Birmingham Children's Hospital, where this post is based, is the Paediatric Major Trauma Centre for the West Midlands.
Main duties of the job
- Normal Working day consists of covering the department unit according to the rota provided each week
- Attend, assist and independently run outpatient clinics
- Assist in the evaluation of patients
- Participate in multidisciplinary clinics
- Preoperative assessment and preparation, surgery and postoperative care of patients
- Attend the Emergency Department to assess, plan and deliver treatment of patients referred.
- Participate in the on call rota
- Assist in the clinical teaching activities of the department
- Assist in organizing weekly patient review meetings
- Cover other colleagues in their absence.
- Conduct active audit and research
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is an exciting period of growth and development for the Birmingham Paediatric Plastics Service. The department is expanding its tertiary reconstructive and lower limb trauma capability, alongside strengthening multidisciplinary pathways with spinal surgery, orthopaedics and vascular anomalies services.
This post attracts 10 programmed activities per week. There may be the opportunity to discuss and review this with the clinical service lead.
SPA time: In line with trust policy and as agreed with our LNC, SPA is supported at a commencing ratio of 8.5 DCC:1.5 SPA. This is subject to annual job plan review and the trust is supportive of additional SPA time as the need arises.
Regular job planning meetings will be undertaken with the post holder to ensure that the appointee is remunerated for any additional activities undertaken and that the job plan accurately reflects the overall workload undertaken by the post holder.
The final job plan will be agreed with the successful applicant and aligned to individual skills and interests.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
- To provide a plastic surgical service at Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
- To play a central role in the development of the regional paediatric lower limb reconstruction and trauma service.
- To undertake clinics and operating sessions for patients currently on waiting lists for Paediatric plastic surgery.
- To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training of health care professionals
- To work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams involved in providing excellent patient care.
- To contribute collaboratively to consultant cross-cover arrangements.

- Adequate evidence of subspecialty training in this area

- Training in hand surgery of minimum 6 months - European or British Hand Diploma or equivalent completed or enrolled
