Locum Consultant in Neurology

Job summary

University Hospital Birmingham is seeking to employ a Locum Consultant Neurologists on a 12-month fixed term contract to sustain and develop the existing services (inpatients and outpatients) and to provide comprehensive care for the population of Birmingham with general and specialist neurological conditions.

This post is funded to facilitate the provision of General Neurology and Specialist services for the West Midlands region and are based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, with the expectation of service delivery across any University Hospitals Birmingham site. It is likely that there will be time spent in a partner centre within the regional neuroscience network. This will be determined by individual interests and the needs of the partner sites. The successful candidate will, alongside general neurological duties, provide predominantly outpatient care as well as some inpatient care of adults with a range of neurological conditions and help to co-ordinate the long-term care of such patients in the community.

Main duties of the job

Essential criteria for the post includes: possession of Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice; Basic Medical Degree (e.g. MBBS); entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview); European Community Rights or CESR; evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Neurology (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview); Full MRCP or equivalent; a wide experience of working in Neurology.

Job responsibilities

The Neurology service at UHB provides sub-specialist services in Multiple Sclerosis, Movement Disorders such as Parkinson 's disease including Deep Brain Stimulation, Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Epilepsy, Neuromuscular Diseases, Neuroimmunology and Headache. There is joint working across Neurosurgery, Trauma, Stroke, Neurophysiology and Neuropsychiatry. The Neurology team consists of 24.85 WTE consultants as well as support from Clinical Nurse Specialists and Physiotherapists. The speciality delivers outpatient-based activity which includes some procedure-based activity that takes place within the outpatients setting. Neurology has 36 inpatient beds on ward 411 that are used to provide both a regional tertiary service and local secondary care provision. The elective inpatient element delivered by Neurology consists of procedures carried out in several locations within the Trust for example: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and infusion therapies delivered on a dedicated day case unit for neurology patients; muscle biopsy delivered in Welcome theatres; and a variety of procedures (including lumbar punctures) via Ambulatory Care Beds.

These are whole time appointments to the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The appointee would provide a maximum of 10 programmed activities, comprising a minimum of 8 programmed activities for direct clinical care and a maximum of 2 for supporting professional activities. All new consultants will be expected to take on additional educational, research or management responsibilities to contribute to SPA time to bring this time to 2.0 SPAs and that failing this, the job plan will revert to allocation of 1.5 SPA. The outpatient work (4 clinics) will include specialist clinics and general neurology clinics with the mix and sub-speciality determined by the needs of the department and experience of the appointee. The appointee 's role will include provision of outpatient General Neurology and ward consultations. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to the regional neurology on-call rota (1:18, with these appointments). There would be an expectation to provide outpatient clinics and support for acute neurology in other hospitals within the Trust (e.g.: Heartlands, Solihull and Good Hope Hospitals) or with the neighbouring District General Hospitals.

It is expected that the post holder will work in close collaboration with the other consultants in providing clinical care for patients. In addition, there are dedicated clinical nurse specialists.

Commitment to research (including multi-centre trials) and teaching is encouraged. This will be reflected in the SPA time and in the applicant 's job plan. The University of Birmingham is located adjacent to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital and an honorary appointment to the University will be available to an applicant with an active research interest.
