Job overview

This is a locum consultant post with existing funding available for a substantive post should the right candidate be a good cultural fit for the Trust and our team. The post-holder joins the minimally invasive surgery and endometriosis team, supporting our BSGE accredited endometriosis service and the wider obstetrics and gynaecology service. We are an innovate, dynamic and forward thinking group who are at the vanguard of the international change towards robotic-assisted surgery, in which we are national leaders. Two existing surgeons are international proctors in robotic surgery. The sector preceptor for training in advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery is in our group. We perform all complex benign and endometriosis surgery robotically. Should a suitably qualified laparoscopic surgeon apply, she or he would be trained to transfer to robotic-assisted surgery. We have a demonstrated track record in training fellows in robotic surgery; one in-house trained fellow is now a consultant colleague in the group.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will have responsibility for the endometriosis and complex benign gynaecology patients, gynaecology operating, gynaecology scan clinics each week and weekly gynaecology MDT. The expectation is that the successful candidate will join the service and develop it with the group in our quest towards national excellence.

The post-holder will be expected to deliver exceptional care to patients within the minimally invasive surgery service. The successful candidate will have responsibility to provide a high-quality service, in conjunction with consultant colleagues already in post and our team of fellows. It would be expected that the consultant offers continuous responsibility for the care of patients named under their team. Research, audit and continuous governance are a key feature of our group, and the successful candidate will be a core part of this.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will also cover obstetrics in a close partnership with other consultants in the group and beyond in the wider department. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate an active interest in the development of minimally invasive surgery and management of endometriosis & general gynaecology patients and to provide a unified multidisciplinary approach to their care. It is expected that the successful candidate will enhance the educational opportunities available to our trainees and fellows by any re-organisation and development of services that they initiate. Regular audits will be required and supervision for Quality Improvement Projects (QIP) undertaken by the trainees. Involvement in general management and committee work for the hospital will also be encouraged. The Directorate has weekly MDT and educational meetings in which medical cases are reviewed and discussed and audits are presented. The Directorate holds monthly Consultant meetings, Gynaecology and Perinatal morbidity and mortality meetings. The post holder will engage as necessary with North West London CRG and any agreed network models for complex emergency gynaecological surgery. The appointee will have a desk in a shared office with access to a computer. Below is an indicative job plan and may be subject to change in conjunction with the post holder.
