Job overview

We are looking for a Whole-Time Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at Northern General Hospital. This is a fixed term post available from 30 September 2026 for one year.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for:

  • Providing a 24/7 consultant-led Emergency Department assessment team to ensure the safe, timely and effective assessment and subsequent management of all patients attending the ED •    Providing consultant opinion for all patients referred for emergency admission and attending the ED.  This will include the provision of an immediate opinion and intervention for seriously ill patients at the request of junior ED staff. •    Working with our Acute Medical Team  •    Taking responsibility for ensuring the appropriate specialty destination for each patient and determining whether discharge home is appropriate. •    The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding clinical research.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of application.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine or Equivalent.
  • If an applicant is applying for the portfolio pathway (formerly CESR) they must have submitted their evidence to the GMC for review by date of interview.

Desirable

  • MD/PhD or equivalent Fellowship or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Manages the difficulties of dealing with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients, employing expertise and clinical decision-making skills of a senior and independent/ autonomous practitioner.
  • Critically reflects on own competence, understands own limits, and asks for help when required.
  • Demonstrates the underpinning subject specific competencies to enable practising as a Consultant in EM as evidenced by portfolio
  • Clinically evaluates and manages a patient formulating a prioritised differential diagnosis initiating an appropriate management plan with the ability to review and adjust this depending on outcomes of treatment

Desirable

  • Previous experience as a Consultant in EM.
  • Interest in a subspecialty area.
  • Ability to practice Evidence based Medicine.

  • Good written communication skills

Teaching and Training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels.
  • Promotes and participates in individual and team learning supporting the educational need of the multi-disciplinary team.

Clinical Governance and Audit

Desirable

  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project

Management and Administration

Essential

  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management
  • Collaborate and respecting the multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams to manage risk issues across organisations and settings

Desirable

  • Experience of working with management groups
  • M&M contributions.

Continuous Professional Development

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
  • Critically assesses own learning needs and ensures a personal development plan reflects both clinical practice and the relevant generic capabilities to lead and develop service.

Desirable

  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio
  • Involved in the development of a service utilising principles of quality improvement
