Job overview

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust are seeking to appoint a 10 Programmed Activity locum Consultant in Diabetes and General Medicine, to be based at the University Hospital Lewisham site as part of the development of the new general medical model and the development of the diabetes service inclusive of foot, antenatal, type 1 diabetes and community diabetes services.

The successful candidate will be offered a 10 PA, 12 month fixed term contract with Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The contract will be held by the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post is for a whole-time (10 PA) Consultant Physician with a focus on delivering diabetes services and covering acute intake medical work, and providing ongoing care to patients admitted on the take. The post will be based at University Hospital Lewisham. This post has scope to become a substantive post.

The job plan will be negotiated between the consultant and the Divisional Director at least annually. A Responsible Officer for Appraisal and Revalidation will be allocated to the post holder, and engagement with these processes will be a requirement of this post.

The appointee will be given an office space and computer/laptop to facilitate all work and will be supported by the department's secretaries.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will provide high-quality health care for patients referred for diagnosis and treatment, including outpatients and inpatients. The post has a focus on delivering diabetes services and covering acute intake medical work, and providing ongoing care to patients admitted on the take.

  • To provide high-quality health care for patients referred for diagnosis and treatment, including outpatients and inpatients
  • To respond to inpatient and outpatient referrals from other specialties
  • To provide prompt, effective advice for General Practitioners
  • To participate in educational and audit meetings
  • To meet CPD and revalidation requirements
  • To provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave
  • To support the Hospital's Clinical Governance Strategy
  • To contribute to all other aspects of the Directorate and Hospital's affairs, including relevant consultant and directorate meetings
  • To provide a consultant-led service in the specialty
  • To support and assist in the development of diabetes services, both in the hospital and in the community
  • To contribute to research in diabetes and endocrinology in an area of special interest
  • To contribute to meeting the NICE standards for diabetes and endocrinology services
  • To contribute to meeting the 4-hour waiting time target in the Emergency Department
  • To contribute to other targets, e.g. RTT in diabetes and endocrinology outpatients
