Newham University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, is seeking a Consultant Physician in Acute and General (Internal) Medicine to join our growing Acute Medicine team on a 12-month fixed-term, full-time basis (10 PAs). The post has been created to strengthen consultant staffing at the hospital’s front door and comes at an exciting time: the Division of Medicine has adopted a newly agreed two-directorate operating model, with Acute Medicine now sitting within the new Urgent & Emergency Care (UEC) Directorate alongside the Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care. Substantive recruitment to this and further Acute Medicine consultant posts is expected within the next few months, and the post-holder would be warmly encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care. To oversee the Acute Medical take, performing mid and post-take ward rounds, facilitating specialty referrals and triage. To provide an immediate medical opinion for seriously ill patients at the request of junior medical staff. 2. Leadership, development and organisation of the services in their charge in line with the Trusts’ business plans. Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director for Acute Medicine and the General Manager for Medicine 3. Development of their own interests and sub-specialties within the specialty, including active participation in Research, Audit and Quality Improvement Programmes. 4. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training. 5. To provide evidence-based care. 6. To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out within the site and Trust guidelines. 7. To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with colleagues within the department, other clinical specialties within the Trust, General Practitioners, community services, and all healthcare agencies. 8. To maintain and promote team and multi-disciplinary work, working closely and regularly with the consultant medical staff. 9. To provide cover for annual and study leave colleagues so far as is practicable.
