We are seeking a full time locum Consultant Haematologist with expertise in all aspects of Myeloma and stem cell transplantation. This is envisaged to lead to a new substantive post due to expanding stem cell transplant and myeloma programmes. The post holder will work in collaboration with the existing consultants, and clinical nurse specialists to provide an expertly led comprehensive range of clinical and laboratory services for patients with myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative disorders, chronic and acute leukaemia’s, lymphoproliferative disorders and plasma cell dyscrasias. The post holder will be a core member of the haemato-oncology multidisciplinary team. The post holder will also be actively involved in the provision and delivery of Stem Cell Transplantation as part of the transplant team.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post are:
- To participate in the weekly myeloma clinic as part of the myeloma multidisciplinary team and provide a liaison with the transplant team for patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplant.
- To be part of the clinical transplant team providing a full range of stem cell transplant activity. This will include assessing patients for suitability for a transplant and taking them through the process. It will involve reviewing policies and all other relevant activities required to maintain and prepare for JACIE and HTA accreditation.
- To be part of the white cell attending team, working in rotation with the other members of the team, to provide robust cover for all patients with haematological malignancies and transplant patients admitted to St George’s Hospital.
- Work closely with the existing haemato-oncology consultant team to provide world class, comprehensive haemato-oncology service.
- Provide consultant input for clinical and laboratory aspects of the haemonc service and work collaboratively with other consultant colleagues in the delivery of the haemonc in-patient and outpatient services.
- Work closely with the Day Unit team to provide high quality care to haemato-oncology and transplant patients receiving outpatient treatment at the unit.
- Opportunity to continue or develop their expertise in a sub-specialised field within haemato-oncology and transplantation.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The appointee will be responsible for the development and maintenance of a high standard of practice of clinical and laboratory haematology. (Further details can be found in the JD)
The clinical commitments of this post are outlined in the provisional job plan. The precise time arrangements of the job plan will be agreed following discussion with the appointee, however, will include adequate provision for clinical (inpatient/outpatient/daycare), laboratory and administration in addition to time for teaching, audit and clinical governance, research and CPD. This job description is not an exhaustive document however it is a reflection of the current position. Details and emphasis may change in line with service needs after consultation with the post holder.
There may be an on-call commitment (currently a 1:12 for first on call consultant haematology cover – with a 1:7 for specialist 2nd on call cover) but this is subject to change depending on staffing levels and expertise within the department.
Final agreement on the timetable of commitments will be made on taking up the post.
Non-working day may be subject to discussion between successful candidate and the service.

- Competent in bone marrow aspirate/trephine, interpretation of flow cytometry, and other diagnostic tools

- Ability to lead multidisciplinary team meetings
Desirable
- Training management Knowledge of the process for CPA and MHRA
- Familiarity with transplant eligibility criteria and registry liaison
Research and Audit
Essential
- Understanding of clinical governance and participation in audit/QI activities
- Evidence of continuing research interest in haematology

- Publication or presentation in national/international haematology conferences
- Active participation in myeloma or transplant clinical trials
Clinical Experience

- Experience in diagnostic and clinical haematology
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients with haematological conditions

- Experience with allogeneic transplantation
- Experience of managing patients on clinical trials

Qualifications and Training
Essential
- MRCP (or equivalent)
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
- Experience of the full range of laboratory haematology disciplines with general haematology.
Desirable
- Higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD) relevant to haematology, transplantation, or myeloma
- FRCPath in Haematology (or equivalent)
