Job overview
We are seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Cardiologist for a six-month fixed-term period at University Hospital Lewisham to support the delivery of high-quality inpatient and outpatient cardiology services.
Main duties of the job
The precise clinical focus of the role will be informed by the successful candidate’s skills and experience, alongside the needs of the service. Given current service requirements, we would particularly welcome applicants with experience in arrhythmia management, heart failure and cardiac devices, as well as the ability to contribute to general cardiology activity. However, we are keen to attract the right candidate and will seek to offer a degree of flexibility in the configuration of the role where this is compatible with service needs.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- The post-holder will be expected to undertake 3 cardiology clinics each week (4 hours each), and to see predominantly new patients with some follow-up capacity built in. We would encourage colleagues to develop specialty clinics, provided that they are of clinical relevance to the service and local needs.
- There is a commitment to adequate levels of secretarial cover on each site. Consultants are provided with sufficient office space and IT support.
- We provide five-day ward consultation services on both sites. Consultants participate in a rota to see ward referrals at UHL. We endeavour to see all referrals within 24 hours of referral. The workload varies but a reasonable expectation would be to see an average of 10-15 ward patients per session.
- There is currently no on-call commitment.
Medical Education & Teaching
Candidates are expected to contribute to departmental educational meetings and clinical supervision of doctors in training.
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
Undertake or supervise clinical audit and comply with Clinical Governance requirements
Continuing Professional Development
- Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level.
- Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice:
a. Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, in line with the Trust’s commitment to supporting revalidation.
b. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
- The Trust is committed to providing mentoring to newly appointed consultants.
Policy, Planning and Management
- Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care.
- Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
- Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service.
- Comply with all Trust policies.
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
