We are seeking an exceptional clinical leader to join Newham University Hospital as Interim Medical Director to cover while the current medical director steps up into the interim CEO role from October 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and ambitious leader to join the hospital executive team at Newham hospital during a period of significant investment and transformation. This is a 10PA post required from October 2026, with the tenure dependent on the successful appointment of a substantive CEO in mid September. The successful candidate will sit on the Hospital Executive Board with a close working relationship with the Director of Nursing and Director of Operations. The post holder’s portfolio will include quality and safety, research and medical workforce however the expectation is that the successful candidate will have a clear overview of all elements of people, quality, operation and financial performance of the hospital.
Main duties of the job
As Interim Medical Director, you will provide visible and effective clinical leadership across a diverse portfolio ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and sustainable care.
Key responsibilities will include:
To provide professional and strategic leadership and support to medical staff within the hospital and support operational delivery of high quality care in line with the GMC Codes of Practice.
Professional leadership of medical staff including responsibility for MHPS case work processes and management.
To provide high level and visionary strategic leadership to all senior clinical leaders.
To deliver the quality and safety portfolio in partnership with the Director of Nursing
Supporting delivery of operational, workforce, quality and financial objectives.
Developing strong partnerships with the community, primary care and system colleagues to improve patient pathways and outcomes.
Supporting the development of future leaders within the hospital.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This role offers the opportunity to be part of key development and delivery opportunities at Newham as part of the executive team to deliver:
Redevelopment of the emergency department and creation of Mental health
Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS)
Expansion and modernisation of Acute and Specialist Medical Services.
Growth of admission avoidance models and ambulatory care services including front door frailty.
Work with place based partners to ensure patients receive care closer to home
Expansion of elective capacity and continued development of orthopaedics ODN
Delivery of high quality maternity and women’s services including a new women’s health hub and the development of a Women’s and Early Life institute

- Able to lead continuous change and improvement in services, encouraging the use of new clinical and service technologies with a multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrable leadership skills
- Able to think and act strategically and to articulate a clear vision and sense of direction
- Ability to define and implement policy development at directorate level
- Communication skills, verbal and written Interpersonal skills, able to influence and motivate
- Able to prioritise and manage competing demands
- Medical education, appraisal and revalidation requirements
Knowledge
Essential
- A broad understanding of the systems for primary care, social care and commissioning
- NHS governance and regulatory frameworks
- CQC standards and quality assurance requirements
- Medical workforce regulations and Maintaining High Professional Standards (MHPS)
- Patient safety systems and quality improvement methodology
- NHS financial and operational challenges
- Medical education, appraisal and revalidation requirements
- An understanding of the healthcare issues in East London
- Knowledge of the Trust priorities
Experience
Essential
- Track record of achieving financial targets
- Extensive experience of working at as a senior doctor
- Experience of senior clinical leadership and management in the NHS and/or a hospital environment
- Experience holding accountability for clinical governance and of the measures to ensure patient safety
- A record of partnership working
- Track record of innovation
- Track record of managing and developing staff
- Track record of addressing poor performance
Desirable
- Experience of system leadership across an Integrated Care System
- Experience as a medical director, Deputy medical director, CMO, responsible officer
- Board-level executive experience
- Research and academic leadership experience
Qualifications
Essential
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Registered medical practitioner with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
- Substantive consultant level experience
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD, PhD, MBA or MSc)
- Management and leadership qualification or equivalent experience
