We’re excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join our dynamic education service. This role offers the chance to work with children and young people (CYP) who have a range of speech, language and communication needs, within the mainstream schools team. You'll collaborate closely with both the mainstream schools team and multi-disciplinary professionals to deliver a tailored service that supports CYP and their families.
In this role, you’ll have the chance to build on your clinical expertise by conducting assessments, identifying needs, and developing, implementing, and evaluating specialist communication interventions.

Main duties of the job
As a Band 7 SLT, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing highly specialised clinical support: Work with children experiencing developmental speech and language, disorders, and social communication differences and complex needs. You’ll use your specialist knowledge in specific areas of speech, language, and communication needs to provide specialist interventions.
- Collaborating with families and staff: Partner with parents, carers, and school staff to enhance the communication skills of children and ensure they can fully participate in the curriculum.
- Supporting SEND responsibilities: Contribute to statutory assessments of Special Educational Needs (SEN) as per the Children and Families Act 2014. You’ll also help deliver speech and language therapy as outlined in children’s Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Professional accountability: Take responsibility for your professional actions, recognising your boundaries and seeking advice from senior colleagues when necessary.
- Mentorship and supervision: Provide support to less experienced colleagues and students, including offering second opinions, supervision, and peer review.
- Liaising with external agencies: Work closely with colleagues from a variety of statutory and non-statutory agencies to ensure a holistic approach to each child’s care.

Essential
- Work with children with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties including those associated with complex needs
- Collaborative work with parents and other professionals, across settings
- Training/Experience of supporting others including more junior therapists
- Experience of supporting children, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education health and Care Plans (EHCPs
Skills & Knowledge
Essential
- Knowledge of typical child development of Speech & Language and general developmental milestones
- Advanced knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for education and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual children
- Knowledge of Education Practice and Policy
- Knowledge of religious, cultural and linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management
- Principles and models of Adult-Child Interaction
- In-depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to education including the Children and Families Act 2014 and education practice and policy
- Knowledge of service models to Education
- In-depth knowledge of the principles of clinical governance /audit
- Understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group) especially within MDT
- Knowledge of professional standards of record keeping
- Excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills
- Demonstrates ability to be a good team member and assume leadership responsibilities
Education/Qualification
Essential
- Degree or equivalent and Licence to Practice – Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
- Further study in clinical field, including completion of short courses and additional study
