The role:

The Adult Eating Disorder Service (AEDS) provides specialist care and treatment for adults with moderate to severe eating disorders who often present with complex mental, physical and social care needs. Based within Specialist Services in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the service delivers evidence-based treatment in community and inpatient settings, promoting recovery, personal choice and independence. Working as part of an experienced multidisciplinary team, the post holder will contribute to high-quality, recovery-focused care and support service users to achieve their individual goals while helping to prevent hospital admission wherever possible.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Heath and Care Worker visa. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS).

36 hours, Monday to Friday 9 am - 5 pm (3.30 pm finish one day to be agreed)

Key responsibilities:

The post holder will play an important role in supporting both physical health monitoring and recovery-focused interventions within the Adult Eating Disorder Service. Working collaboratively with service users, carers, families and the wider multidisciplinary team, they will develop therapeutic relationships built on empathy, respect and compassion. Responsibilities include undertaking physical health assessments, including venepuncture following appropriate training and competency assessment; supporting agreed treatment and recovery plans; monitoring and reporting changes in physical and mental health; assisting with therapeutic activities and interventions; encouraging participation in therapeutic, educational and recreational programmes; supporting therapeutic eating interventions; promoting social inclusion and community engagement; assisting individuals to develop healthy coping strategies and practical life skills; maintaining a safe environment in accordance with organisational policies and procedures; and participating in ongoing professional development, supervision and reflective practice. The post holder will receive regular supervision and support from a designated clinician and will be line managed by a Band 6 Senior Eating Disorder Practitioner.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Experience of working in a supportive and enabling role.
  • Understanding of mental health recovery and the factors that support or hinder the recovery process.
  • Ability to support individuals in developing and working towards recovery goals and plans.
  • Ability to work creatively and in an enabling, person-centred manner.
  • Ability to maintain and model appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Ability to undertake practical tasks and support daily living activities where appropriate.
  • Understanding of the impact of stigma, discrimination, equality and diversity issues.
  • Ability to manage stress effectively and prioritise workload.
  • Strong understanding of confidentiality and information governance requirements.
  • Excellent active listening skills.
  • Awareness of the value of clinical supervision and reflective practice.
  • Computer literacy and confidence using electronic systems.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and best practice guidance.
  • Willingness to undertake training and competency-based assessment in physical health monitoring, including venepuncture.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of mental health and eating disorder care.
