Job overview

Senior Health Care Assistant will be responsible for providing a range of personal care for patients and a range of clinical duties under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional.

Senior Health Care Assistant work independently performing a number of clinical duties/tasks following training and meeting competency within role as per policy and procedure.

Main duties of the job

Main duties for the post include;

  • Undertake duties such as making of beds, supporting with personal hygiene, toileting, correct patient positioning, assessing pressure areas and skin integrity.
  • Be aware of the patient’s needs – emotional, social, physical and cultural.
  • Work as part of the team in a co-operative, professional and constructive manner
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Manage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals
  • Assist with dietary needs of the patient as required
  • Undertake a range of clinical competencies including venepuncture and cannulation following ANTT principles, physiological observations and record appropriately.
  • Obtaining samples as requested such as wound swabs, eye swabs, urine specimens, MRSA swabs, stool samples and sputum specimens.
  • Assist in blood collection
  • Assist in maintaining a clean environment.
  • Perform ECG recording, urinalysis, changing of simple wound dressings and capillary blood glucose monitoring, catheter care, removal of catheters , stoma care, measuring and monitoring patient outputs.
  • Actively participate in and attend ward/unit meetings.
  • Demonstrate good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberties and applies principles to everyday practice.
  • Promote health and safety maintaining best practice in health, safety and security
  • Adhere to legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines both local and national .
