JOB DESCRIPTION
POST: Nursing Assistant
LOCATION: Belfast Health & Social Care Trust

REPORTS TO: Midwife/Nurse in charge
RESPONSIBLE TO: Lead Midwife/Ward Sister/Charge Nurse/Team Leader
Job Summary / Main Purpose
The post holder is required to provide & assist in the provision of high quality person centred care for patients and the families.
The post holder will assist in all aspects of direct personal care for patients/clients & to carry out other assigned tasks in support of and supervised by a Registered Nurse or Midwife.
The post holder must ensure that all information regarding patients is kept in strict confidence.
The post holder will promote and support effective team working, fostering a culture of openness and transparency.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
For each of the following areas the post holder will;
Communication
Deal courteously with patients, relatives, visitors, & others with whom they come into contact in the course of their duties.
Communicate effectively with patients & others taking into account their clinical conditions and differing levels of ability to understand.
Observe & report any changes in patients’ conditions or behaviour, including appetite, to relevant nursing staff.
Ensure that any instructions regarding patients’ treatment and diet are carried out & recorded as directed e.g. Fluid balance charts.
Maintain confidentiality of information at all times, regarding patients & staff.
Record &/or pass on messages to the Nurse-in-Charge as required.
Report issues and complaints to relevant nursing staff as required.
Always act in a courteous and respectful manner.
Provision of Care
Follow the agreed plan of care.
Respect peoples’ dignity, wishes & beliefs & obtain their consent for treatment.
Assist with the care of patients’ clothing, laundry, lockers & wardrobes.
Assist in the preparation & serving of meals & beverages for patients.
Assist with infant feeding.
Assist patients to eat & drink & record & report same.
Maintain high standards of practice at all times.
Participate in the care of the deceased patient & their relatives.
Record & report care activities undertaken accurately to the nurse-in-charge.
Assist nursing staff in the delivery of person centred care.
Personal & People Development
Participate in the Trust’s Personal Contribution Framework and KSF and participate in the Development Review system.
Keep up to date records of own development review process.
Attend staff induction and participate in training and other learning activities as required.
Share best practice with others.
Health, Safety & Security
Undertake duties that are required to ensure adequate standards of environmental hygiene and prevent cross infection.
Keep the Registered Nurse informed of any changes affecting patients & or staff.
Report any accidents and incidents to relevant nursing staff and assist in the investigation of same, verbally and in writing as required.
Comply with health and safety policies and statutory regulations.
Contribute to a safe environment within the risk management and clinical governance strategy.
Comply with trust policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols and codes of conduct.
Contribute to effective and economic use of resources and the maintenance of all equipment.
Work within own role in emergencies & summon help.
Identify & report any health, safety & security issues to the appropriate person.
Ensure that uniform is worn correctly.
Service Improvement
Contribute to effective team working.
Cooperate with off duty scheduling so as to ensure that adequate staffing and optimum use of staff resource is achieved.
Demonstrate commitment through regular attendance.
Quality
Assist in the reception, admission & discharge of patients.
Carry out assigned duties under the direction of a qualified nurse in such a way as to ensure that nursing care is of a high standard.
Cooperate with nursing, medical & auxiliary staff to ensure that harmonious relationships are maintained within the Trust.
Ensure economical use of resources.

Environmental Cleaning Strategy
The Trusts Environmental Cleaning Strategy recognizes the key principle that “Cleanliness matters is everyone’s responsibility, not just the cleaners” Whilst there are staff employed who are responsible for cleaning services, all Trust staff have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public.
Infection Prevention and Control
The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
This includes:-
Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO ‘5 moments’);
Using the correct ‘7 step’ hand hygiene technique;
Being ‘bare below the elbows’ when in a clinical environment;
Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);
Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;
Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately i.e. cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;
Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.
