Job overview

We are looking for two dynamic  health and safety officers to be part of the Health and Safety Team here at UHL who are keen to make an impact in advancing the Health and Safety Strategy at the Trust.

You will be passionate about health and safety, communicating this to support front line staff to deliver safe, effective and high quality care, whilst driving continuous and quality improvement.

The role is instrumental in the development and implementation of the Trust’s Health and Safety Policy and health and safety protocols, developing and delivering a new Health and safety management system, delivering a programme of health and safety training to a wide audience base and providing specialist health and safety advice for capital project planning.

We would also welcome applications for a developmental post commencing at Band 5, with a structured set of objectives and an agreed action plan in place.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the Health and Safety team engaged to provide support across all departments within the Trust, in the understanding, management and subsequent control and mitigation of the health and safety requirements across the defined areas of the allocated portfolio.

The post holder will work closely with the Health and Safety Services Managers and key stakeholders at all levels of the organisation, to review performance and identify risk reduction priorities, contributing to the formulation of the trust and CMG annual health and safety plans.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Health & Safety Officer will act as a competent professional adviser, providing expert guidance and support across a complex acute healthcare environment to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and the effective management of risk. The role is responsible for supporting the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Trust’s health and safety management systems, including policy development, risk assessment, audit and inspection programmes, and incident investigation.

The post holder will deliver specialist advice on a wide range of operational and strategic issues, contribute to governance and assurance processes through high-quality reporting, and support the design and delivery of training to ensure staff at all levels understand and effectively manage health and safety risks.

Working as part of the wider Estates & Facilities and Health & Safety team, the post holder will build strong relationships across clinical, corporate and operational services, engaging with managers, staff and external partners to promote a proactive safety culture.

Key relationships include Estates & Facilities leadership, clinical management groups, risk and governance committees, project teams and external regulators where required.

Essential

  • Frequent use of IT equipment for day-to-day work Standard Keyboard skills and daily usage of MS Office Software.

Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and experience of Health and safety management systems
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience of problem solving and communicating findings to key stakeholders
  • Understand and apply information governance principles.
  • Experience of delivering health and safety training to groups
  • Experience of developing training programmes and packages
  • IT skills and experience of using Microsoft office. Working knowledge of data collection, storage, and retrieval systems

Training and Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree level or equivalent knowledge gained through relevant experience.
  • 2 years practical experience of working within a health and safety environment.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Member of IOSH (or equivalent)
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Nationally approved level 4 teaching
  • Nationally approved level 4 teaching qualification i.e., City & Guilds 7407, PTTLS.
