An exciting opportunity has emerged for an outstanding nursing leader to join as the Lead Nurse for Cancer at Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust. In this role, you will be responsible for upholding and advancing clinical standards as outlined in the NHS Cancer Quality Standards, including the National Cancer Waiting Times Standards and the Cancer Outcomes Framework. You will support matrons, clinical nurse specialists, nurses, allied health professionals (including ACPs), and support workers across diverse specialities such as oncology, haematology, cancer performance, and outpatients, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices and NICE guidance for cancer care.

Your focus will be on ensuring the safety, wellbeing, and voices of both patients and staff are prioritised, in line with the NHS Cancer Patient Experience Survey standards. We seek an innovative, inclusive leader with exceptional communication skills, capable of inspiring confidence and commitment to continuous improvement in clinical practice. You will contribute to the Trust’s quality objectives and drive achievement of high standards of care within the Care group, as prescribed by the NHS England Quality and Safety Standards for cancer services. Autonomy, compassionate professional advice, and a flexible, visible, and responsive approach are essential.

Main duties of the job

As Lead Nurse for Cancer, you will report directly to the  Director of Nursing for Specialist Clinical Services and collaborate closely with the Care group leadership team. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as a pivotal member of the management team to facilitate the delivery of outstanding cancer services, ensuring alignment with divisional objectives, targets, quality standards, regulatory controls, and resource limitations as outlined in business plans.
  • Supporting and advising matrons, clinical nurse specialists, nurses, allied health professionals (including ACPs), and support workers within oncology, haematology, cancer performance, and outpatient services, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices and NICE guidance for cancer care.
  • Championing the safety, wellbeing, and voices of patients and staff, in line with the NHS Cancer Patient Experience Survey standards and the Trust’s quality objectives.
  • Providing visible, compassionate leadership and expert professional advice, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the Care group
  • Ensuring governance and assurance mechanisms are robust, and operational management is effective, maintaining compliance with NHS Cancer Standards and best practice guidelines.
