Applicants are invited for the post of the Hand and Wrist Surgery Fellow for a period of 12 months. Applications are welcomed from trainees that are in their final year who will CCT / CESR prior to the posts starting, although the post would commence only after completion of training.

The purpose of this fellowship is to produce hand and wrist surgeons who are well versed in the breadth and depth of the subspecialty. The fellows are expected to gain mutually complementary perspectives and skills from both Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeons and Plastic Surgeons, in the management of hand and wrist conditions.

Prior to the scheme being withdrawn nationally, our fellowship was recognised by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) as a Training Interface Group (TIG) Advanced Training Post in Hand Surgery, one of a small number of such posts nationally which BSSH regards as representing the pinnacle of hand surgery training in the UK.

Main duties of the job

Candidates for this post will be expected to demonstrate a keen interest in hand and wrist surgery.

The post will be supported primarily by 5 orthopaedic and 2 plastic surgery hand and wrist surgeons.

Clinical sessions will be held across all three main UHL sites, with additional sessions in the peripheral sites also an option. These will consist of trauma and elective hand clinics hosted by both parent specialties. The fellow will be trained and developed to run both supervised and independent operating theatre lists and out-patient clinics, and take lead roles in organising the MDTs and annual meetings (Hand Fracture, Soft Tissue, and microsurgery training courses). We believe this broad exposure will provide the fellow with the higher skills, techniques and treatment algorithms required to build upon in their future hand surgery careers.

We encourage fellows to sign up to the British (and/or European)hand diploma within the department, and will help facilitate additional tutorials within nearby units as required.

It will be assumed that, at the end of the appointment, the Fellow will obtain a consultant, or other comparable post, with a special responsibility for Hand and Wrist. The expected period of the Fellow's appointment will be for twelve months.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To support and take joint responsibility for the clinical work of other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• To teach undergraduates and post-graduate trainees and healthcare workers that rotate through the Department
• To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place by actively participating in audit.
• To work with the CMG management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match.
• To provide continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice.
• To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trust’s ‘Critical Incident Policy’, are reported in a timely manner.
• To undertake mandatory &statutory training as determined by the Trust and the CMG

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
