We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Registered Nurse to join our Nurse-led Vascular Access Service (NLVAS). This is an exciting developmental opportunity for a nurse who is keen to develop advanced vascular access skills and gain experience within a specialist service.

Working alongside experienced Vascular Access Nurses, you will receive training and support to develop expertise in vascular access assessment, ultrasound-guided cannulation, PICC and Midline insertion, and the management of a wide range of vascular access devices. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across the Trust, helping to improve patient experience, support timely treatment delivery and promote safe, evidence-based care.

Main duties of the job

This is a developmental role designed to support the post holder in acquiring the knowledge, skills and competencies required to become a Vascular Access Specialist Nurse.

The post holder will work closely under the supervision of senior Vascular Access Nurses to develop the clinical knowledge, technical skills and professional competencies required to practise within the vascular access specialty.

Under supervision, the post holder will contribute to the coordination and delivery of the Trust-wide Vascular Access Service, supporting the timely and effective management of referrals for a range of Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs). This will include triaging referrals, assessing patients for the most appropriate vascular access device, and assisting with the insertion, management and removal of devices such as Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) and Midline catheters.

The post holder will develop competence in ultrasound-guided vascular access procedures and the assessment and management of a variety of vascular access devices. They will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to promote safe, evidence-based practice and high standards of patient care while progressing towards autonomous practice within the specialty.

The role also includes undertaking quarterly vascular access audits in line with the Trust audit programme, collecting and analysing data, producing reports and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

As a developing specialist practitioner, the post holder will act as a positive role model and support the ongoing delivery and development of the service, including cross-site working as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of the Trust-wide Nurse-led Vascular Access Service (NLVAS), supporting the assessment, insertion, management and removal of vascular access devices in line with Trust policies, national guidance and evidence-based practice.

Working under the supervision of senior Vascular Access Nurses, the post holder will support the assessment of patients requiring vascular access devices and assist in determining the most appropriate device based on clinical need. They will develop competence in vascular access procedures including peripheral intravenous cannulation, ultrasound-guided vascular access, Midline insertion and Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) insertion.

The post holder will contribute to the coordination and management of referrals to the Vascular Access Service, supporting effective patient flow and timely access to treatment. This includes working collaboratively with medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues across the Trust.

The role includes the ongoing assessment and management of vascular access devices, recognising and escalating complications appropriately, maintaining accurate clinical records and promoting high standards of infection prevention and control.

The post holder will undertake vascular access audits in accordance with the Trust audit programme, contribute to data collection and analysis, prepare reports and support quality improvement initiatives that enhance patient safety and service effectiveness.

The post holder will participate in education and training activities, supporting the development of staff knowledge and competence in vascular access care and management within their level of competence.

The post holder will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including ward nursing teams, medical staff, Radiology, Microbiology, Dietetics and Infection Prevention and Control to support safe, effective and patient-centred care.

The role requires cross-site working and participation in the ongoing development of the Vascular Access Service to ensure delivery of a high-quality specialist service across the organisation.
