Job overview

We’re recruiting a Finance Support Officer to provide high-quality support across the Corporate Finance function. This is an exciting new role that combines transactional finance, reporting and practical support to our Finance Business Partners, including contributing to the month-end close.

Corporate finance spans the whole Trust, so you’ll work with a wide range of services and stakeholders. It’s a great opportunity to build your finance skills, develop confidence in interpreting complex financial information, and contribute to the insights that help teams manage resources effectively.

We’re looking for someone who is organised, proactive and keen to learn, comfortable working in a busy environment, with strong attention to detail and a positive, outward-focused approach.

Working in NHS finance means your work directly supports patient care by helping the Trust run as efficiently and effectively as possible for the people we serve.

Main duties of the job

Under the leadership/guidance and with support across the Corporate Finance team

- Accurately input financial information to the ledger and associated systems

- Liaising with key stakeholders, budget holders, and users of financial information

- Use finance software to upload expenditure and other bulk journals to the ledger

- Assist in the preparation and input of budget and expenditure journals into the financial system to agreed timetables, including correction of feeder system input

- Production and analysis of reports and confidential financial information from appropriate systems to answer ad hoc enquiries

- Support analysis and explanation of budget /expenditure/income variances in liaison with appropriate staff

- Meet with budget holders on a regular basis to support and inform

- Support and advise team members in the preparation of business cases for revenue and capital developments

- Respond to ad hoc queries around what may be sensitive, political and confidential issues, including Freedom of Information requests

- Ensure information provided is consistent with corporate objectives

- Data entry

- Carry out other duties that may from time to time be required by finance staff

- Provide cover across the team as needed

Qualifications and Training

Essential

- 3 A Levels or Equivalent

- 5 GCSEs including Maths and English (Grade 4 / Grade C and above)

Desirable

- Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 3 qualified

- Studying or desire to study for a CCAB qualification

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and formulas

- Ability to analyse, interpret and report large complex data

- High level of numeracy and accuracy skills

Desirable

- Able to create/refresh reports in PowerPoint

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Teams

- Aware of the benefits of AI and able to utilise in line with the Trust AI policy

Experience

Essential

- Finance accounting software system experience

- Practical application of basic accounting concepts and techniques

- Experience of prioritising demands and working to tight deadlines

Desirable

- Appropriate finance experience within the NHS or a large finance department

- Experience of working with varied stakeholders
