JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for the administration and organisation within the fertility clinic. Provides nursing care, support and advice to fertility unit patients. Act as a link between the multidisciplinary team and the patient. Responsible for supervising and teaching of learners and junior nursing staff within the unit.

Communicate fully with patients/partners throughout their contact with the fertility unit and act as a link person for advice and support.

Liaise with the medical team about any concerns regarding the welfare of the patients, their families or their potential children.

Initiate updating of written and verbal patient information on a regular basis.

Refer to other members of the multidisciplinary team or outside agencies for advice and support as appropriate.

Liaise effectively with all members of the fertility unit team to ensure a harmonious working atmosphere and a high quality service for the patients of the unit.

Provide pre treatment information sessions for patients/partners undergoing fertility treatment

Provide ongoing support and advice for all fertility unit patients who require it.

Teach patients/couples injection techniques and support them throughout this process.

Participate in the assessment of patients/couples for their suitability for treatment regarding their own welfare and the welfare of the unborn child.

Ensure effective written consent is obtained from patients for licensed procedures within the unit.

Provide patients and enquirers with up to date information regarding success rates, treatment options, waiting lists for NHS funding and self funding prices.

Keep up to date with current fertility issues.

Ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order and resuscitation equipment is checked on a weekly basis with discrepancies reported to the nurse in charge.

Take responsibility for the ordering of medical, surgical and pharmacological supplies to ensure a safe and clinical service is maintained, while being mindful of financial constraints.

Ability to work bank holidays on rotational basis.

KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Communication

To lead the development and evaluation/Audit of relevant protocols, guidelines and policies based on current evidence and research and facilitate/support other staff to do the same.

Clinical Practice and Decision making

Demonstrates specialist skills and knowledge in clinical practice pertaining to fertility, in particular treatment scheduling, nurse consultation to include health education and health promotion.

Performs scanning to an agreeable standard at nurse led clinics.

Carries out nurse led consenting clinics.

To be responsible for own time management to ensure effective and efficient time management to cover own specialist workload.

Accountable for own professional actions when giving advice at nurse consultations, therefore having freedom to act autonomously.

Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the relevant legislation, in particular the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act (1990), The Code of Practice and The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct.

Monitor and promote high standards of nursing documentation and in particular monitors consent forms as required by the HFEA.

Adheres to Hospital Policies in relation to: -

Reporting of accidents/incidents involving patients, visitors or staff.

Health and safety at work policy.

Fire prevention Policy.

Reporting of Sick leave/Absenteeism.

Confidentiality.

Hospital disaster plan.

Control of Infection.

Teamwork

Deputise for the unit Sister.

Liaise with medical, scientific, nursing and administrative staff in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team to ensure awareness of the need for, and the implications of change.

Using reflective practice contributes to the development of specialist practice and service enhancement by undertaking/assisting in research or audit.

Participates in focus groups e.g. Risk Management, quality and Audit group.

Liaises with fertility network support groups.

Supports junior members of staff by induction, training and clinical supervision.

Participates in team building and strives to ensure the management ethos of continual improvement and quality.

Acts as a resource to other clinical areas e.g. General Practitioners and Gynae staff.

Quality of care

Participates in the provision of up-to-date, accurate and relevant health education using evidence based practice.

Participates in audit and quality programmes.

To maintain the delivery of a high quality standard of care, keeping abreast of professional and technological developments relevant to the field.

In consultation with the multidisciplinary team, encourage innovation, research based practice and evaluation of new techniques within Regional Fertility Centre.

Management

Is aware of financial considerations and judgements to maximise cost effectiveness and cost efficiency.

Maintains and monitors adequate stock control of supplies and drugs in the fertility clinic.

Participates in individual performance review and staff development.

Is responsible for implementation of and subsequent adherence to SHSCT Trust policies in accordance with Clinical Governance guidelines.

To attend study days.

To ensure COSHH, Infection control, Risk management and maintenance of Health and Safety within the department is implemented according to unit and Trust Policy and that every effort is made to identify and minimise potential risks/hazards.

To attend meetings within SHSCT applicable to fertility, and relevant meetings and study days outside the SHSCT.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Review individually, at least annually, the performance of immediately subordinate staff, provides guidance on personal development requirements and advises on and initiates, where appropriate, further training.

2. Maintain staff relationships and morale amongst the staff reporting to him/her.

3. Review the organisation plan and establishment level of the service for which he/she is responsible to ensure that each is consistent with achieving objectives, and recommend change where appropriate.

4. Delegate appropriate responsibility and authority to the level of staff within his/her control consistent with effective decision making, while retaining overall responsibility and accountability for results.

5. Participate, as required, in the selection and appointment of staff reporting to him/her in accordance with procedures laid down by the Trust.

Take such action as may be necessary in disciplinary matters in accordance with procedures laid down by the Trust.
