Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a dedicated Head and Neck/ENT Surgeon to join the department on a 10 PA job plan.
This replacement post is open to candidates with subspecialty training in Head and Neck Surgery who can complement and enhance the existing expertise within the department. The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the Head and Neck Unit, including the management of urgent cancer referrals to ensure national targets are achieved.
Applicants should have fellowship training in major Head and Neck Surgery, including thyroid and complex airway surgery, and ideally possess consultant-level experience in these areas. The role includes commitments to outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and on-call duties, with dedicated time allocated for administration and supporting professional activities.
The appointee will be expected to contribute actively to clinical governance, teaching and audit, supporting the department's commitment to continuous improvement and high-quality patient care. Access to a car is essential for on-call responsibilities.

Main duties of the job
General responsibilities:
The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service.
Subject to the provisions of the terms and conditions of service she/he must observe agreed policies on clinical matters and should follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Hospital.
In the management of employees of the Trust, she/he will be expected to follow legislation laid down in this respect.
All employees must comply with the Trust Infection Control Policy. All employees must attend infection control training as required within their department or as directed by their line manager.
You will be expected to be committed to Continuing Professional Development that satisfies the criteria laid down by the Royal College of Surgeons.

Job responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities:
The appointee will be involved in running clinics, theatres and being included in the ENT consultant on call rota.
The current post is a Head and Neck post, and it is suitable for those who can complement the skills and sub-specialities in the department. It is expected that the successful candidate will support the department achieve the targets for urgent cancer referrals by seeing the patients on the 2-week referral pathway and participates in their management.
Due to the restructuring of services following the UHB surgical site strategy, ENT operating will be at the QEHB and BHH sites. Head and Neck resections including laryngectomy, complex airway surgery, head and neck resections requiring free flap reconstruction, input of thoracic surgeons, transoral Robotic surgery and skull base surgery (low volume high complexity surgery) will be performed at the QEHB site. High-volume low complexity surgery (day case) will be at the BHH site. Therefore, all ENT consultant job plans will be based on UHB surgical site strategy.
It is also expected that the appointee will take part in training and teaching the junior doctors and other allied health professionals.
