Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Endometriosis Specialist Nurse to undertake a development programme as a band 6 and acquire the specialist knowledge, skills and competencies required to become an autonomous Endometriosis Specialist Nurse. The role includes working alongside Consultant Gynaecologists, Specialist Nurses and the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will provide specialist support, education and care coordination for women with suspected or confirmed endometriosis

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical support and advice to women undergoing investigation and treatment for endometriosis.
  • Participate in nurse-led clinics under supervision whilst progressing towards autonomous practice.
  • Act as a key worker and point of contact throughout the patient pathway.
  • Support delivery of telephone advice and support services.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care pathways.
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative education and support.
  • Participate in BSGE audit and accreditation data collection.
  • Contribute to audit, quality improvement and service development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The overriding purpose of the post will be the further development and leading of the specialist nurse aspects of the endometriosis service.

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Provide support to women undergoing Endo Gynaecology surgical procedures; ensuring they have received written and verbal information pertaining to their planned surgery.
  • Together with the Gynaecology Consultants and members of the immediate specialist clinical team, effectively co-ordinate and deliver an expert nursing service within the specialist area.
  • Ensure a positive impact on the experience of patients and carers
  • Assist with the capture and recording of the BSGE Pelvic Pain questionnaire and database requirements to ensure compliance with the BSGE Standards and accreditation.
  • Develop evidence based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines.
  • Act as a patient advocate when discussing treatment and lifestyle options.
  • Opportunity to develop/ Act as a surgical first assistant providing continuous; competent and dedicated surgical assistance as part of the Gynaecology Surgical team.
  • Following appropriate training be able to assess appropriateness and insert LNG-IUD

The post holder will:

  • develop clinical expertise within the specialty.
  • work within Gynaecology fertility and surgical services; advice and guidance may be sought from other areas of the organisation.
  • provide a responsive assessment service to patients who telephone for advice, ensure responsive triage and implementation of appropriate and timely clinical care for patients
  • work alongside other clinical colleagues to develop the skills and knowledge required.

  • develop and implement clinical policies/ guidelines, education, and audit programmes relevant to the endometriosis service.
  • be required to develop, implement, maintain and monitor standards of care to ensure patient safety and quality of care and to work with the Clinical Lead to resolve failures of standards of care in all areas of the patient environment.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Sound knowledge of the care and management of women undergoing gynaecological procedures and Endometriosis care.
  • Knowledge of leading and developing a nurse led service within the specialty.
  • Understanding of information and support needs of patients referred to the Endometriosis service
  • Knowledge of the Patient and Public Involvement agenda and how to improve services for patients.
  • Up to date knowledge of current evidence based practice in nursing

Desirable

  • Evidence of change management or knowledge of change management strategies
  • Knowledge of audit and research methodology

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant and recent post registration experience in Gynaecology with an emphasis on Endometriosis.
  • Experience of acting on and translating clinical findings
  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Continuity of care, taking responsibility and managing patients at different time points through their journey
  • Evidence of developing nursing practice within a clinical outpatient setting.

Desirable

  • Current experience of developing a nurse led service
  • Experience of undertaking audit.
  • Experience of acting as a surgical first assistant
  • Experience in implementing policy and procedures.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • Current NMC registration
  • Relevant and recent post registration experience in Gynaecology with an emphasis on Endometriosis.
  • Ability to demonstrate management of a telephone advice line service
  • Computer literacy
  • • Ability to communicate in an articulate, professional way with people at all levels of understanding either face to face, on the telephone, e-mail or written communication by dealing with incident reports, writing statements and letters to staff
  • • Understanding of information and support needs of patients referred to the Endometriosis service.
