
Job summary
To provide a high-quality housekeeping and domestic service that supports a clean, safe, welcoming, and comfortable ward environment for patients, visitors, and staff. The post holder will contribute to infection prevention and control standards by maintaining cleanliness thoughout the ward and supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of ward services.
The post holder will work as an integral part of the ward team ensuing a high-quality service to patients, ensuring cleaning is carried out in accordance with the National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness 2025

A Domestic Assistant in the NHS plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Their work helps prevent the spread of infection and supports high standards of patient care.
- Cleaning wards, clinics, offices, corridors, waiting areas, and public spaces.
- Dusting, mopping, vacuuming, and polishing floors.
- Cleaning toilets, bathrooms, sinks, showers, and sanitary areas.
- Emptying domestic and clinical waste bins and disposing of waste safely.
- Replenishing supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet rolls.
- Carrying out deep-cleaning tasks and responding to spillages or emergency cleaning situations.
- Using cleaning equipment and chemicals safely in line with COSHH and infection prevention policies.
- Reporting maintenance issues, hazards, accidents, or concerns to supervisors.
- Good attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Understanding of hygiene and infection control procedures.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a caring attitude towards patients and visitors.
- Usually based in hospitals, health centres, clinics, or NHS offices.
- Shifts may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
- The role involves standing, walking, bending, lifting, and manual handling throughout the day.
