Director of Nursing & Quality

Job overview

As HUC’s most senior nurse and clinical quality leader, you will set the strategic direction for our nursing and Allied Health Professional workforce and embed a culture of clinical excellence across all services. You will be the visible guardian of patient safety, safeguarding, infection prevention and control, and clinical governance, providing board‑level assurance to regulators, commissioners and the Board.

Working closely with the CMO, Operations and People teams, you will influence service design, quality strategy and workforce development while representing HUC externally as a trusted clinical voice. Main duties of the job

• Provide strategic clinical and operational leadership for HUC’s nursing and AHP workforce, setting standards that promote clinical excellence and patient‑centred care.
• Lead delivery of the Quality Strategy, owning clinical governance, incident reporting, risk management, audit and learning from harm to drive continuous improvement.
• Hold organisational accountability for safeguarding (adults and children) and infection prevention and control, ensuring compliance with national legislation and best practice.
• Ensure regulatory compliance (CQC, NHS England, UKHSA), prepare inspection evidence and provide board‑level assurance on safety, quality and mandated reports (e.g. Quality Account).
• Develop and implement a professional education and career framework aligned to “Build Your Own”, including competency frameworks, preceptorship, mentorship and CPD to grow and retain talent.
• Line manage the Head of Nursing and Quality, Head of AHPs and IPC, and lead the new Patient Ambassador role, ensuring visible clinical leadership and support for the workforce.
• Partner with the CMO, Operations and executive colleagues to shape innovative service models, digital triage and telehealth, and to collate quality and safety reports that inform board decisions.
