** Staff Nurse - Deputy ward manager** on Willow ward within the low secure Forensic directorate** An opportunity has arisen on Willow ward within our Specialist Low Secure Forensic Service for a Staff nurse based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Willow ward is a 12 bedded male rehab unit. We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to work as a staff nurse as part of the nursing team and managerial team. The post holder will be: professional, open minded and work well as part of a team. Due to the nature of the unit, successful candidates will be confidential, provide person centred support and be able to care for someone in a non judgemental way. Some tasks will include administering medication, aiding service users recovery, which involves working closely with service users on individualised risk reduction work. This will also include leadership and supporting the ward manager to run and effective team on Willow ward. This can include, supervision, sickness reviews, roster support, incident reviews, supporting MDT. Due to Willow ward being a forensic ward, the post holder will require a good understanding of the 3 different types of security (physical, relational and procedural). This is to ensure the safety of service users, staff and visitors. With this in mind, Willow ward follows the model of least restrictive practice.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within a close team of other staff nurses and healthcare support workers on the ward to ensure safe running of the ward and patient centred care at all times. The post holder will have opportunity to work closely with service users as a key nurse and contribute to the wider multi-disciplinary team, This role requires the post holder to be able to document in an accurate and timely fashion.

Due to the nature of forensic mental health working, the post holder will be offered both managerial and clinical supervision and regular support from the team.

This is an opportunity for the post holder to work within a specialist team including a variety of disciplines with a wide range of knowledge and expertise.

Assessing risk as a huge part of being a forensic mental health nurse in all elements of the role such as: pre leave risk assessments, up to completing FACE and HCR-20 risk assessments.

Staff nurses are required to work a regular rotation of night shifts, long days, alternative weekend working and working bank holidays – including Christmas and new year.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Shift Leadership: Acting as the nurse-in-charge to coordinate the safe running of the ward, allocate daily tasks, and manage staff.
  • Clinical Care: Delivering person-centred mental health recovery support, facilitating therapeutic observations, and supporting patients with Section 17 leave.
  • Risk Assessment: Balancing risk management with least restrictive practices in a forensic environment to ensure the safety of both service users and staff.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: Implementing frameworks like Safewards and Positive Behavioural Support to actively engage patients and manage complex behaviors.
  • Supervision & Mentorship: Providing both clinical and managerial supervision to junior registered nurses and support workers.
  • MDT Collaboration: Working closely with the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to review and update patient care plans.
