We are seeking to employ enthusiastic, highly motivated Deputy Sister/Charge Nurses to join our joint services within DPU and SDAU.
The Day Procedure Unit team at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is one of the major elective surgical units in East Anglia. Following the Nationally recognised British Association of Day Surgery Directory, the unit is continually reviewing and evaluating its services, providing pre and post operative nurse led care for wide range of surgical specialities, including Urology, Gynae, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Oral, General Surgery, Vascular and Pain Management.
In conjunction the Same Day Admission Unit (SDAU) is a dedicated department which admits and prepares adult patients for elective surgery. Our patients attend the Same Day Admissions Unit for their admission, and after their surgery they are then transferred to an inpatient ward for their recovery and discharge. Our teams work closely with other departments in the Trust, including the Day Procedure Unit, Preoperative Assessment, Surgical Specialty Teams, Anaesthetics, Theatres and the wards.

Main duties of the job
The Day Procedure Unit and Same Day Admissions Unit embraces the opportunity for individuals to gain leadership skills to co-ordinate patient activity, to manage own workload and to assist the coordinator with day-to-day tasks in both departments.
The post holder will be expected to support the clinical leader in providing leadership and effective management for both Day Procedure Unit and the Same Day Admissions Unit. You will also undertake a full range of perioperative duties in the care of adult patients from admission, third stage recovery and discharge, and decisions of suitability to transfer patients, adhering to agreed admission discharge and transfer protocols according to training and competence. You will also be exptected to co-ordinate patient activity, staffing and utilisation within the clinical area in order to deliver high quality health care whilst upholding and influencing local and professional values. In order to co-ordinate and communicate DPU and SDAU you will need to maintain communication with people about difficult matters and in difficult situations as well as maintaining accurate and complete records of patient activities.
Our working hours are Monday to Sunday, from 07:00 – 19:30, 09:30 – 22:00. We currently do not work on Bank Holidays or nightshifts.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the clinical area to ensure that the service provided is maintained at a high standard.
- Provide clinical leadership and expertise to promote a patient centred high quality approach to care.
- Work as a credible practitioner in a specified clinical area and exercise accountability over a designated sphere of practice.
- Demonstrate leadership by personal example, fostering good interpersonal relationships and encouraging high staff morale.
- Co-ordinate the activity within the unit and be responsible for setting standards and supervising clinical practice.
- Work within the boundaries of the Trust’s Clinical Governance framework.
- Deputise for the Clinical Leader in their absence.
- Develop and maintain communication with people about difficult matters and in difficult situations and maintain accurate and complete records of patient activities.
- Undertaking a full range of third stage recovery duties and the care of more complex dependant patients.
- Undertaking a full range of perioperative duties in the care of both paediatric and adult patients from admission, post op recovery and discharge, and the transfer of patients, adhering to agreed admission discharge and transfer protocols according to training and competence.
