This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic practitioner psychologist to lead and further develop a high quality, responsive and accessible Offender Personality Disorder Pathway / OPDP service within Wales, as hosted by Swansea Bay University Healthboard and in partnership with His Majesty’s Prison & Probation Service (HMPSS).
The post holder will be welcomed into the broader Swansea Bay Mental Health and Learning Disability (MHLD) psychology department. The postholder will join a Consultant Lead Psychology team within our Secure Services and Recovery (SSR) Division, with access to regular peer supervision CPD, reflective practice and service development work as well as having an ongoing programme of clinical and professional development.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will professionally lead a team of psychologists, ensuring that appropriate management structures and good clinical governance for the team is in place. They will support the Professional Lead for MHLD Psychology with recruitment to any additional, funded posts within the service area. Additionally, they will undertake direct and indirect clinical work, offering a range of psychological interventions to patients, their families and networks. They will work with the multidisciplinary ensuring that service plans, developments and pathways are psychologically informed.
The lead psychologist will ensure systems are in place for reviewing and evaluating the service, and for ensuring good clinical governance across psychology. They will help to ensure other psychologists and psychological therapists have appropriate support and supervision in place and are enabled to develop their professional competencies and careers.
The service and staff have excellent links with SBU psychology department. There are also good links to Swansea and Cardiff and Cardiff Metropolitan universities with opportunities for hosting MSc students and trainees.

Essential
- Ability to manage Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists, and provide leadership within the defined Psychology Service
- Sufficient experience to demonstrate a level of competence to satisfy the assessment requirements of two BPS/DoH National Assessors in Psychology for entrance into Consultant Grade
Desirable
- Formal leadership development training Experience of Committee work /special interest
Aptitude and abilities
Essential
- Ability to use highest level of interpersonal and communication skills, requiring empathy and reassurance, to convey and receive highly complex/sensitive information effectively in a highly emotive atmosphere, and ability to overcome psychological resistance to potentially threatening information, whilst maintaining high degree of professionalism at all times.
- Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary settings
Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential
- Registration with HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist
- Attendance at several taught post-graduate course and pursuit of supervised self- directed study in specialist field of the defined area. Substantial experience of application of this knowledge
Desirable
- Record of publications in peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books
