We are seeking to appoint an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to work within our Child & Adolescent Learning Disability Service.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy, developing service to provide consultation to specialist CAMHS for children and young people with moderate to profound intellectual disability, some of whom may have significant co-morbid mental health needs.

We are looking for a consultant with the interest and skills in providing strong medical leadership to take our services forward. The role is being offered on a permanent basis, alongside a tailored management leadership programme for those individuals who would be interested in pursuing this.

Main duties of the job

  • The LD CAMHS service is a comprehensive multidisciplinary learning disability mental health team, incorporating psychiatry, psychology, learning disability nursing, speech and language therapy and behavioural analyst expertise. The team provide a highly specialist learning disability CAMHS service for children and young people with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities with additional mental health needs and/or challenging behaviour. Many of the CYP have complex needs related to Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and/ or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The team have strong relationships with the local authority disabled children services, special schools and education departments across all boroughs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide consultation and liaison with clinicians in Tier 2 and 3 services for patients resident within the boroughs of Richmond and Kingston, referrals to and liaison with Tier 4 providers and, together with the rest of the service, education and support for Tier 1 referrers.
  • To provide clinical support for the team and provide psychiatric oversight to the team.
  • To provide emergency consultation, liaison, advice, management and appropriate support to professionals within the team and in the wider network of the child, young person or family.
  • To work in partnership with young people, parents and carers to develop and implement effective and agreed care plans.
  • To contribute to the development of multidisciplinary and multiagency packages of care, treatment and support for young people and their families with complex mental health, physical health and social care presentations, through effective consultation, liaison and joint-working.
