WLCH is seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious Consultant Paediatrician in Respiratory Medicine to join our busy paediatric respiratory service. This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the UK’s most innovative and collaborative child health partnerships, bringing together services across Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will join a highly regarded multidisciplinary respiratory and sleep medicine team led by Professor Louise Fleming. The post offers a particular opportunity to develop expertise and service provision in paediatric asthma alongside broader respiratory medicine practice.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant Paediatrician in Respiratory Medicine will play a key role in delivering and developing paediatric respiratory medicine services across West London Children’s Healthcare, primarily based at St Mary’s Hospital with cross-site responsibilities as required.

The postholder will join an established multidisciplinary respiratory team and contribute to the provision of high-quality inpatient, outpatient and acute respiratory care for children and young people. A key focus of the role will be supporting and developing paediatric asthma services across WLCH.

The successful candidate will participate in consultant attending and on-call respiratory rotas, provide specialist respiratory and sleep clinics, and work collaboratively with colleagues across WLCH and partner organisations to ensure safe, effective and equitable care.

The role also includes active involvement in teaching, training, clinical governance, quality improvement and research, with opportunities to develop academic interests through close links with Imperial College London and the Imperial College Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health.

The postholder will contribute to service leadership, pathway development and strategic planning to support WLCH’s vision of improving outcomes and reducing inequalities for children and young people across North West London.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will provide high-quality paediatric respiratory and asthma services primarily at St Mary’s Hospital and across West London Children’s Healthcare (WLCH) as required, with particular interest in problematic, severe asthma, Paediatric lung function testing and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participating in clinical and other service activities to ensure a high standard of patient care • Delivering outpatient, inpatient and on-call care as part of the consultant respiratory rota • Providing outreach support to other North West London paediatric acute provider Trusts • Working collaboratively with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and patient experience • Participating in clinical governance activities including audit, incident reporting, quality improvement and implementation of NICE guidance • Supporting service development and business planning across WLCH • Taking an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, departmental research, clinical audit and CPD • Supervising, supporting and appraising junior medical staff and contributing to recruitment and workforce development • Working flexibly across WLCH sites in line with service needs, including clinics at both St Mary’s Hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital • Providing oversight and planning associated with the St Mary’s Hospital Lung Function Laboratory

The role includes participation in an annualised consultant rota with attending and on-call commitments, including predictable and unpredictable out-of-hours work and weekend ward rounds.
