Job overview

Applications are welcomed from enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join the established, friendly team of Paediatric Haematologists in our purpose-built haemato-oncology/SCT unit at Waterfall House, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital (BWC).

One full-time Consultant post is available in the department. The post holder would provide subspecialty cover for all aspects of Stem Cell Transplant, and for patients with Bone Marrow Failure and benign haematological conditions.

The Paediatric Haematology department at BWC provides all aspects of clinical haematology and laboratory care to the paediatric population of Birmingham and the West Midlands. The department is comprised of a Principal Treatment Centre for malignant haematology; JACIE accredited Stem Cell Transplant Unit; Authorized Treatment Centre for Gene Therapy for Transfusion Dependent Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Disease; Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Centre; West Midlands Paediatric Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre; Centre of excellence for ITP and Thrombosis and Anticoagulation service for Birmingham and West Midlands.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of dedicated medical team of 8 Consultants (including this post), 10 Haematology Specialist Registrars/Clinical fellows and 3 ST2/3’s.  There are also 6 trained/in training Advanced Nurse Practitioners in our department.

As one of the UK’s largest Paediatric Haematology departments we see a broad case-mix of both malignant and non-malignant disease and we oversee active clinical programmes in all areas of Haematology including Stem Cell Transplantation, Haemoglobinopathy, Haemostasis/Thrombosis and Haemato-Oncology.

As a University teaching hospital we provide excellent opportunities for education and research.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides secondary and tertiary level paediatric services for the child and adolescent population of much of the city of Birmingham: it is the regional referral centre for the West Midlands (population 5.2m).  Our core purpose is “to lead exceptional services for the health and well being of every child and young person” and the hospital’s integrated and holistic approach was highlighted as an example of best practice in the recent report from the NHS Future Forum.
