Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine (with sessions in a base specialty)

Our team of 14 dynamic and enthusiastic consultants are pioneering an exciting transformation strategy in the Critical Care Department at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust. This post is a replacement post, and may be offered as a fixed term locum position for 12 months.
Our department treats over 1600 patients a year across two sites in South London with a wide case-mix of general medical and surgical admissions. We house a number of subspecialties in our Trust including ENT, nephrology, urology, bariatrics, complex orthopaedics, interventional cardiology, high-risk obstetrics and numerous cancer specialists. Around 40% of our patients are ventilated at any one time, and around 3% of these are retrieved by tertiary ECMO services. We provide emergency renal replacement therapy to around 60% of our admissions. Our ICNARC mortality and other outcomes are comparable to similar units.
Main duties of the job
We offer annualised contracts that allow for generous periods of time away from work. These posts are open to full-time intensivists and we are flexible and will therefore also accommodate those who wish to maintain clinical sessions in another specialty (e.g. anaesthesia, acute medicine, emergency medicine, respiratory medicine and nephrology).
These posts attract 10 programmed activities (PAs) and are offered as a split of 7.5 direct clinical care (DCC) and up to 2.5 supporting professional activities (SPA). SPA allocation is reviewed annually to ensure appropriate consultant skill development and career progression, whilst meeting the needs of the service.
All candidates must be eligible for full GMC registration and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within six months (of interview date) of receiving CCT/CESR, please provide supporting evidence. Please see the person specification listed.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- Full Registration with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practise
- CCT or CESR(CP) in Intensive Care Medicine, or within 6 months of obtaining this at the time of interview
Desirable
- FICE echocardiography accreditation
- Level 1 or 2 qualification in ultrasound
- FRCA, MRCP or FRCEM (if intending to work future sessions in the respective specialty)
- ALS/APLS/ATLS Instructor in at least one of these courses
Other Attributes

Clinical Experience
Essential
- Training and competence in Intensive Care Medicine

- Ability to deal with complex clinical problems that may arise during the post
Desirable
- Experience and training in a relevant base discipline (e.g. anaesthesia, emergency medicine, respiratory medicine, nephrology)
- Post-registration clinical fellowship in a non-UK intensive care unit
Quality Improvement
Essential
- Understand the principles of quality improvement
- Evidence of participation in a quality improvement project
Desirable
- Able to demonstrate change from a quality improvement project in critical care
- Evidence of other clinical governance activity, including critical incident investigation and morbidity & mortality review
Research Experience
Essential
- Understanding of research principles, research governance and scientific methods
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable
- Higher degree (PhD or MD) in relevant subject
- Recent publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Previous research experience in ICM
- Presentations at national or international research meetings
- Ongoing interest in clinical research
Teaching Experience
Essential
- Experience of teaching undergraduates
- Evidence of teaching clinical skills to postgraduates
Desirable
- Evidence of specialist teaching qualification
- Experience in delivering simulation training
- Evidence of training to enable educational supervision
Management Experience
Essential
- Evidence of ability to organise rotas, teaching programmes or training events
- Appropriate understanding of NHS directives regarding consultant clinical practice including clinical governance
- Relevant IT skills
- Ability to lead and manage a multidisciplinary team
Desirable
- Training/experience in NHS management
- Experience in service development
- Attendance at a management course aimed at senior trainees or consultants
