Applications are invited for an enthusiastic Stroke Consultant to join the existing Stroke team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

The post holder will contribute to the stroke service. You will be based on the Stroke Unit which comprises of a 12 bedded HASU and 30 acute/rehabilitation beds. We admit approximately 1400 patients a year and thrombolyse about 150 cases/year. You will participate in aspects of stroke care including hyper acute, acute and rehabilitation as well as running Follow Up clinics and Acute TIA clinics, teaching of undergraduate students and postgraduates and take an active role in audit and research within the department. The Department of Stroke lies within Neurosciences and the Clinical Group of Neurosciences and Trauma Services. There are excellent working relationships with Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology.

The job plan can be tailored to accommodate the candidate’s parent specialty interest e.g. geriatrics, neurology, acute medicine, rehabilitation.

The post is based at University Hospital Coventry although with centralisation, the successful candidate may have responsibilities to the rehabilitation units at Royal Leamington Spa Rehabilitation Hospital and George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as a Consultant Physician providing, with colleagues, a safe and effective stroke service and TIA service.
  • To work with rehabilitation services to ensure timely and safe transfer of care.
  • To contribute to audit, the Stroke Data-base and performance review to ensure the service continues to meet the requirements of the National Stroke Strategy, Regional Stroke Specification and SSNAP.
  • To contribute to stroke service teaching and training.
  • To contribute to under-graduate teaching.
  • To contribute to an out of hours service which is currently being established Management & Service Development.
  • In conjunction with Clinical Director, Group Manager, Matron, Consultant and Senior Colleagues, to take an active role in the management of the Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work seamlessly within the team of stroke physicians which currently is made up of 4 geriatricians, 1 acute medicine consultant, 1 general medical consultant and 2 neurologists).

It is expected that the post will contribute to the out of hours cover for stroke including thrombolysis and referral for thrombectomy on a 1:8 rota.

There are currently 2 rotational Neurology SpRs, 1 rotational Geriatric SpR, 2 Senior Clinical Fellows [registrar level] and 8 Junior Clinical Fellows [SHO level] and 1 F1 within the stroke service. The Junior Clinical Fellows provide a 24/7 resident on-call service for stroke along with stroke specialist nurses.

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy run a 7-day service to assess and treat patients. Research is encouraged and well supported by the Trust’s research department.
