Job overview

This is a great opportunity to join one of the biggest paediatric plastic surgery departments in the country within a dedicated children’s hospital.

The appointee will provide paediatric burns and plastic surgery care, with a specialist interest in facial palsy. This post would suit a candidate with a passion for paediatric plastic surgery and an interest in facial palsy and microsurgery.

Alder Hey provides general paediatric services for the local paediatric population receiving referrals from both general practitioners and the Emergency Department (the busiest paediatric Emergency Department in Europe). There is a wide spectrum of paediatric trauma, including combined orthoplastic management of lower limb trauma.

Main duties of the job

A substantial proportion of the plastic surgery carried out by the hospital is the tertiary level care, including children with burns and congenital abnormalities such as vascular and hand anomalies. Alder Hey is one of six paediatric burn centres and admits burn patients of all severities, including those requiring Paediatric Intensive Care. There is a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment facilities with access to a full aspect of paediatric specialist expertise on site. A multidisciplinary team performs paediatric craniofacial surgery as a supra-regional speciality and the Trust provides a regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service.

The appointee will join a strong multidisciplinary team involved in facial palsy management, including therapists, psychologists, neurologists and surgeons and lead the specialized Moebius Syndrome service. There is opportunity to develop a second subspecialist interest.

The successful candidate will participate in a 1:6 on call for plastic surgery, including burns at Alder Hey Children's Hospital at Category A.

The post-holder will report through the Clinical Director for plastic surgery to the Chief Medical Officer with professional support from the Divisional Director of Surgery.
