The Gastroenterology Directorate is seeking to recruit a substantive Consultant Gastroenterologist with a specialist interest in Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) Endoscopy (ERCP and EUS) to join our dynamic, innovative and expanding team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering and developing high-quality HPB endoscopic services and related patient care across the Trust. This is substantive 10 PA job but LTF will also be considered. On a 10 PA job plan the successful candidate would be required to deliver a minimum of 2 out-patient clinics and 2 endoscopy lists per week.

The post holder will join an established team of Consultant Gastroenterologists and HPB Endoscopists, contributing to the provision of diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP and EUS services, while supporting the wider gastroenterology service. There will be opportunities to further develop the advanced endoscopy service, contribute to training, service improvement and multidisciplinary working.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work across our hospital sites including Sandwell Health Campus, City Health Campus and the state-of-the-art Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH).

Applicants must hold MRCP (UK) or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training in Gastroenterology or equivalent. Candidates must be on the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology, or be within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.

The post will enable the successful applicant to develop sub-specialty interests in HPB Endoscopy to complement the existing consultant staff. The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18-week patient pathway guarantee. There will also be a commitment to the gastroenterology ward on-call as part of this post (consultant of the week 1, COW1), which at present is 1 in 12 (which may change in future) providing gastroenterology input 7 days a week and currently has a supplement of 3%. There will be a rest day following the COW1 week on Monday.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will also undertake a consultant of the week 2 (COW2) shift twice a month providing in-reach gastroenterology service to the acute medical unit in the morning followed by an inpatient endoscopy list in the afternoon. They will also take part in advice and guidance from primary care as well as doing the gastroenterology and triage service virtual clinic of 20 GP referrals per clinic. The appointee will be required to undertake 2 weekend endoscopy lists each year as part of their job plan.

We deployed a new electronic patient record in 2019 and have an ambitious digital road map that will put us as leaders in digital healthcare delivery.

As well as being the closest adult hospital to Birmingham’s busy city centre, MMUH offers dedicated maternity and children’s services. Crucially, it brings together teams who provide acute, emergency care, in line with the views expressed in our public consultation.

The majority of outpatient services are still provided at Sandwell Health Campus, City Health Campus site and Rowley Regis.

City Health Campus houses three key facilities including the Birmingham Treatment Centre providing outpatient, day case and diagnostic services, the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, and the Sheldon Block that provides intermediate care services. The Sandwell site houses the Sandwell Treatment Centre, intermediate care beds, and a new 24-hour urgent care centre.
