Consultant in Emergency Medicine

Job summary

We are looking for new enthusiastic Consultants in Emergency Medicine who have a passion to deliver excellent care to patients at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital Emergency Departments. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of one of the UK's largest NHS Trusts, delivering high-quality emergency care to a diverse population across Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Effective management of the emergency workload is a major priority for the Trust, and we are looking to recruit Consultants who will help us to deliver high-quality care by working within and alongside the existing Emergency Medicine teams.

The Emergency Medicine team is supported by a broad range of other clinicians including emergency practitioners, advanced care practitioners, doctors in training, locally employed doctors and medical students. The ED departments are further supported by nursing, flow co-ordinators, operational and admin colleagues, to support the delivery of high-quality care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work as part of the Consultant team and contribute to the development of the department and Emergency Medicine as a speciality. The post holder will work closely with nursing, managerial and medical colleagues to provide high quality healthcare for patients.

Provision of a first class clinical service for patients.

Development and Championship of the speciality of Emergency Medicine.

Provision of leadership to all staff both in clinical and non-clinical settings

Participation in teaching, research, audit and governance programmes within the EM Directorate.

Appetite for professional self-development and innovation

Pro-active engagement in the development of Emergency services. Excellent communication skills and self-awareness.

Emotional resilience.

Job responsibilities

Our departments include a resuscitation area, high dependency areas, majors areas, minor injury areas, paediatric areas and, at Good Hope Hospital, a GP in ED service. At Heartlands, minor injuries and minor illness care is delivered from the newly built Urgent Care Centre (UCC).

Both hospitals are designing and building Urgent Treatment Centres over the next year, and on the Heartlands site we are designing an Emergency Village which should contain Adult and Paediatric ED, UTC, multiple SDECs, Radiology and ITU. This provides ample opportunity for involvement in strategy and design within and beyond the Emergency Department.

The successful candidate will provide expert clinical leadership within a busy Emergency Medicine service, managing a wide spectrum of acute presentations while supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to drive service improvement, enhance patient flow, and contribute to achieving key operational and quality standards.

These are 10PA jobs, but we may be able to offer personalisation to the successful candidate. There is an expectation that all consultants undertakeadditionalrolesto aid departmental development and educational supervision, this will be finalised with successful candidates in your personalised job plan andnormally ranges between 1.5-2.5 SPA. There will be opportunities to develop personal and subspecialty interests depending on experience and service needs.

Appointees must have necessary qualifications and should either be on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be within 6 months of the CCT at the time of interview.
