This post is a new post; it is a full time Consultant in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD). Applicants for part-time, job share, or flexible working (including time off in lieu) will be considered. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with the Clinical Leads/Clinical Director.

This is an appointment at Royal Brompton Hospital Chelsea, London, SW3 6NP and St Thomas Hospital, Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7EH

Main duties of the job

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Your job plan is anticipated to contain 10 Programmed Activities per week on average to be carried out on the Royal Brompton and St Thomas’ sites and does not include on-call commitments. This is an outline programme, and you will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including your personal and professional objectives with your Clinical Leads/Director within 3 months of your start date.

As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.

The job plan will be negotiated between the consultant and his/her clinical director at least annually.  The initial job plan for this post is planned to be:

Final agreement on the timetable of commitments will be agreed on taking up the post, below is a simplified summary; the job plan will be reviewed at least annually as part of the job planning process. 1.0 Core SPA is allocated with additional SPA allocation on discussion with clinical leads.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

  • The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC full and specialist registration in a cardiology discipline and hold a current licence to practise
  • To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
  • Contribute to the CMR service for ACHD patients, including for the growing cohort of patients with complex conditions and prior surgeries and/or invasive procedures.
  • Integrate new advancements into CMR scans as soon as clinically possible, including all advances in CMR AI and scan sequences and help drive adaptation for application in ACHD e.g. for DT-CMR, high resolution fibrosis imaging for RV or EP needs/
  • Contribute to the full breath of the transoesophageal echocardiography service at Royal Brompton including ACHD TOE
  • To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
  • To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
  • Contribute to the clinical care of patients with ACHD
  • To contribute to ACHD outpatient and MDT work

Research, Teaching and Training

  • To collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
  • To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required

Medical Staff Management

  • To participate in objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.

Governance

  • To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director.
  • Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
  • To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
  • To keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.

Leadership and Team Working

  • To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national or local initiatives.
  • Advance the internal, national and international visibility of CMR in ACHD through collaborations and presentations at symposia and congresses.
  • To work collaboratively with all staff as required.
  • To attend the regular meetings for the specialties.
  • To resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties.
  • Adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.

Essential

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in cardiology speciality
  • Specialist training in CMR of Adult Congenital Heart Disease at a level suitable for complex ACHD acquisition and reporting and teaching fellows and technicians
  • Specialist training in Adult Congenital Heart Disease
  • Specialist training in TOE of Adult Congenital Heart Disease (1 year FTE or equivalent dedicated ACHD echo experience)
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision

Desirable

  • Specialist training in paediatric cardiology of 6 months or more

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practice) with the GMC
  • UK trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Non-UK trained applicants must be on the specialist registrar.
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
  • Level 3 credentialing in CMR
  • Level 3 credentialing in CMR congenital heart disease
  • TOE accreditation relevant to tertiary adult cardiology service

Desirable

  • PhD directly relevant to ACHD imaging

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Essential

  • Good interpersonal and communications skills in line with the Trust’s Core Behaviours (see appendix one)
  • Ability to initiate & supervise ACHD research
  • Evidence of active involvement in governance and audit
  • Understanding needs of service development
