This is a rare opportunity to join one of the largest, most comprehensive and internationally recognised burns services in the UK, delivering fully integrated paediatric and adult burns care across Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

We are seeking a Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon to join a highly experienced, friendly and supportive consultant team, within a forward-thinking, clinically led and innovative Trust. The post offers real scope to develop specialist interests, contribute to service improvement, and build a fulfilling long-term career in burns surgery.

  • A senior fellow / post-CCT candidate approaching completion of a recognised burns fellowship.

Main duties of the job

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing high-quality consultant-level care for patients with burn injuries, covering the full pathway from acute assessment and resuscitation through to operative management, reconstruction and long-term follow-up, for both children and adults.
  • Participating in the 1:7 consultant burns on-call rota, providing senior decision-making and leadership across both paediatric and adult burns services.
  • Contributing to regular burns MDT meetings, ward rounds, outpatient clinics and operating theatre sessions across both sites, ensuring continuity and excellence of care.
  • Working closely with a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, including nursing, therapy, psychology, play and social care colleagues, to deliver holistic, patient-centred care.
  • Contributing to the education and supervision of trainees, fellows and resident doctors, and supporting undergraduate medical education within the Trust.
  • Actively engaging in research and innovation, including participation in local, national and international clinical studies, and supporting the Trust’s ambition to offer research participation to patients and families wherever appropriate.
  • Supporting the ongoing development and evolution of the Birmingham Burns Service, contributing to service improvement, innovation and, where appropriate, leadership initiatives aligned to the Trust’s clinical strategy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon. It is a full-time job, including on-call covering pediatric and adult burns. The Post holder will join a team of consultant surgeons who provide the service in both the pediatric burns center at Birmingham Children Hospital and adult burn centers at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. In addition to burns, the post holder will have the opportunity to do additional plastic surgery subspecialities depending on experience and the need of the adult or pediatric plastic surgery services.

You will join a well established and active team of burn surgeons who work across both hospital sites to provide care in both the Paediatric and Adult Burn Centres in Birmingham, as part of the Midlands Burn Operational Delivery Network.

Description of the posts The post holder will be based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. It is full time 10PA job; however, less than full time is acceptable. The successful applicants would also be expected to participate in a 1:7 on-call rota covering both the pediatric burns center Birmingham Children Hospital and the adult burns center at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

The appointee will join the burn surgery team and will have the opportunity to develop an interest in an area of general plastic surgery and /or laser therapy, along with their commitment to the burns service. It would be expected that the major responsibilities of the posts are to the burns service (paediatric and adult).

There is a regular teaching and audit commitment to the Specialist Trainees on the West Midlands Rotation and the new appointee will be expected to participate in the training of the SpR and junior trainees. The appointee would be expected to take an active interest in conducting research as well as presenting and publishing relevant clinical findings and research results.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Wide experience in total burn care, at a senior level in the NHS including surgical and non-surgical management of complex and major burns, both acute care and long term reconstruction for children and adults
  • Specialist burns fellowship (6 months minimum) covering both adult and paediatric burns at post CCT/CESR level or at senior level post FRCS Plastic
  • Experience in general plastic surgery and/or laser therapy

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council GMC, with license to practice
  • FRCS(Plast) or equivalent
  • On the GMC Specialist Registration in Plastic Surgery. Or CCT in plastic surgery within 6 months at time of interview.

Desirable

  • A postgraduate degree / research degree in burns related topics, such as PhD or MD is highly desirable
  • Medical Laser Certificate / experience

Travel between sites

Essential

  • Ability to undertake on-call for burns at both adult centre (QEHB) and paediatric centre (BCH) and travel between sites
  • Residential address withing 10 miles or 30 mindrive from BCH

  • Commitment to research and recruitment for the clinical trials in the Trust.
  • Commitment to burns department audits and evidence of previous audit experience
  • Commitment to training and teaching postgraduate and undergraduate clinical staff; especially in burns.
  • Oral presentations at National/International meetings on burn topics.
  • Research related to burns and burn management.
  • Completed audit cycles and presented Audits on aspects of burn management.

Desirable

  • Peer reviewed publications in burns journals
