Broad experience in the full range of anaesthetic practice expected of a Consultant Anaesthetist. Significant experience in peri-operative care of elective and emergency surgical patients. Experience of providing obstetric anaesthetic services including labour ward and emergency obstetric anaesthesia. Experience of managing emergency anaesthetic cases and participation in emergency on-call services.
- Education and professional qualifications
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise. CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent specialist accreditation and eligibility for entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview. Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent recognised specialist qualification. Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) consistent with Royal College and GMC requirements.

- Experience
Post A: Demonstrable experience and current competence in ophthalmic anaesthesia, including provision of anaesthetic services for ophthalmic surgery. Post B: Experience in ophthalmic anaesthesia is desirable but not essential.

Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint two substantive Consultant Anaesthetists to join the Anaesthetic Department at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH).
These appointments offer an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, supportive and forward-thinking department delivering high-quality anaesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialities. Both appointees will contribute to elective and emergency anaesthesia services, teaching, clinical governance and service development.
The two posts have different specialist requirements. Post A requires substantial experience and current competence in ophthalmic anaesthesia. Post B is a general Consultant Anaesthetist post for which ophthalmic anaesthesia experience is desirable but not essential.

Main duties of the job
The Role
Both successful applicants will:
- Deliver high-quality consultant-led anaesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialties.
- Participate in the Consultant Anaesthetist on-call rota.
- Contribute to emergency and trauma anaesthetic services.
- Support obstetric anaesthesia and labour ward services.
- Participate in the teaching, training and supervision of junior doctors and medical students.
- Lead and contribute to clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities.
- Support service redesign, innovation and strategic development across the Trust.
- Contribute to perioperative pathways and enhanced patient care initiatives.
Post-specific responsibilities
- Post A: Provide independent consultant-level anaesthetic care for ophthalmic surgical procedures and support the development of the ophthalmic anaesthetic service.
- Post B: Undertake a full range of general consultant anaesthetic duties across elective, emergency and obstetric services. Experience in ophthalmic anaesthesia is desirable but not essential. Where relevant experience is held, the post holder may contribute to ophthalmic anaesthetic services according to their competence and departmental requirements.

Core Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality consultant-led anaesthetic, peri-operative and emergency care services at North Middlesex University Hospital, part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring safe, effective and patient-centred care at all times.
- Deliver anaesthetic services across a broad range of surgical specialties including General Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Urology, Gynaecology and Ophthalmology.
- Participate fully in the Consultant Anaesthetist on-call rota, currently operating on a 1:13 basis with prospective cover.
- Support the delivery of elective and emergency theatre services, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care and patient safety.
- Contribute to the strategic development of anaesthetic services within the department and wider Trust.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure seamless patient pathways and excellent clinical outcomes.
- Demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust's Shared Commitments and organisational values.
